Prisons, an orphanage and more: Schoenstatt reaching out in Nigeria

NIGERIA, Agaptus Ihediuba /Maria Fischer •

The Schoenstatt Movement in Nigeria is young and small – but very apostolic. Students of the Schoenstatt Fathers visited a prison, Schoenstatt Youth reached out to an orphanage, and spiritual offers for young people were but a few of the apostolic works serving people in this West African country.—

January 18th was a special Covenant Day. As the International Schoenstatt Youth gathered in Costa Rica in preparation for World Youth Day, all of the students of the Schoenstatt Fathers, together with the Rector, Fr. Dr. Charles Ozioko and Spiritual Director, Fr. Nichodemus Okenwa, made their annual visit to Agodi Prisons. Each of the brothers were able to have a personal encounter with the prison inmates in order to share in their life experiences and offer them some gifts and words of encouragement.

Schoenstatt Youths reaching out to orphans

The Schoenstatt Youth visited “Total Parental Orphanage” in Ibadan for one of their Lenten resolutions. The visit took place immediately after Sunday Mass. The youths were present in numbers including some Schoenstatt boys and girls. They had a very beautiful encounter with the children at the orphanage. Brother Agaptus organized an introduction between the youths and children, together with those who work in the orphanage. They also learned about Schoenstatt’s mission; together they sung some Schoenstatt hymns and said some prayers. At the end of the visit, the youths offered some gifts to the orphanage, which they appreciated.

A Valentine for couples, and for youths

Fr. Kingsley Okereke organized a special Valentine celebration in a very beautiful and colorful way for Schoenstatt couples and a few other families that come around for mass in the community and visit the Shrine regularly.

For their own part, the Schoenstatt Youths organized a Valentine celebration around the Shrine; Adeline Onugha, who is the leader of the Schoenstatt Girls in Ibadan, organized this. Agapitus Ihediuba, a student of the Schoenstatt Fathers, collaborated with Adeline in organizing this youthful and wonderful event. The talk was focused on the topic “Relationship with the opposite sex.”
