On May 9, the teachers of our school San José de la Comuna in the Shrine of Quito united in the Covenant of Love with Mary. —
The San José de La Comuna School, a work of the Niños de María Foundation, is a school for some 300 children in the La Comuna neighborhood, an area that is not only characterized by its material poverty, but there is a total lack of values and an internal poverty that often marks more than the material.
A project to help highly vulnerable children
The school was born in 1993 by a group of families of the Schoenstatt Movement, families in solidarity and committed to God and their country, who decided to create a project to help highly vulnerable children in our society. Thanks to the contributions of benefactors and companies in solidarity, they are able to offer the children quality education, food and health care.
The children’s reality is harsh. Due to lack of resources, they do not qualify for public education. They come from families with serious problems of alcohol, drugs, domestic violence, congenital disorders, a parent in prison or conflictive separations. They are children who have dropped out of school for several years and of these, 40% are at risk of being abused or suffering an indecent assault. 53% are at risk of abandonment.
This is where the teachers of St. Joseph School of La Comuna begin their work… now in the covenant of love of the Mother of all of us.
