Emilie Engel - Schoenstatt Sister of Mary
October 12th 1999: opening of the beatification process

Emilie Engel
1893-1955
Schoenstatt Sister of Mary

(mkf) Trier. About 700 persons joined this morning at Liebfrauen Church, Trier - the church close to the cathedral, dedicated to Mary - for a special holy Mass, celebrated at 9:00am by Auxiliary Bishof Dr. Felix Genn, Trier (substituting for Bishop Spital, who is sick), for the opening of the beatification process for Sr. M. Emilie Engel.

Parishioners from her home parish at Husten/Iseringhausen came with two busses - a 4 hour ride; Schoenstatt members from the Trier diocese, but also from other regions of Germany, took part; four ladies from the Philippines, who are spending some days in Schoenstatt, also did not want to miss this event and came to Trier. - You saw a number of busses, minivans, and cars with Schoenstatt members of the highway from Koblenz to Trier this morning!

Fr. Marmann, Msgr. Wolf, Fr. Strada and other Schoenstatt Fathers and Schoenstatt priests, Schoenstatt members from Schoenstatt, and of course a big group of Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary, and a number of young families with small kids, youth, and young people, made for a big congregation filling every corner of the Liebfrauen Church. Auxiliary bishop Genn greeted everyone at the beginning of the Mass, specially the guests from Sr. Emilie's home town, and the Schoenstatt Sisters with their General Superior, Sr.M.Jacoba.

The choir - about 50 Schoenstatt Sisters - sang songs with words from Sr. Emilie's prayers, and other songs for more voices. Bright sunlight illumined the church, when Bishop Genn began his sermon, focussing on this event as an hour of offering to the church what so many persons throughout the world experienced for years: this woman, Emilie Engel, has something to give to modern people. Schoenstatt wants to share this richness with everybody.

After the holy Mass, those chosen to join the official opening prodedure, went there, all the others were invited to go to the Europahalle, a big conference building about 10 minutes walking distance, for lunch and an encounter with persons who had met Sr. Emilie. The 500 or so persons "processing" through the city of Trier made several tourists and shoppers ask: "What is going on here? From where do these many sisters and many joyful persons come?"

During lunch, Schoenstatt members from the different countries, areas, generations and communities joyfully congratulated each other for the opening of another Schoenstatt members's beatification process. Everybody was invited to afterwards also visit the Schoenstatt Shrine in Trier.
