PERU/SCHOENSTATT, Queca Espinoza/mkf. "We are all Peru," wrote Juan Barbosa from Cordoba, Argentina shortly after a call for prayer was made from Queca Espinoza from Lima, Peru just a few hours after the devastating earthquake on August 15th. Every 18th is a time when all the Movement renews its attachment to the Shrine by gathering again in the Shrine to renew the Covenant of Love, as Father said, "With the MTA and with the family." A Covenant of Love as a family is what was strongly experienced in prayer for Peru during the days around August 18th. In a matter of hours, the Schoenstatt Family from Peru received expressions of help and solidarity in prayer from Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Germany, Mexico, United States, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile… We are all Peru because we are family, and because it is known that Peru is a county where every Schoenstatter on the planet has family. For this reason it is a people of brothers and sisters and a country of brothers and sisters. The Covenant Love makes every person a brother or sister. Peru, August 16thIn some areas we still do not have phone service, but those Schoenstatters I have been able to contact are O.K. We need your prayers because as of now there are 300 deaths and 800 victims. The authorities have canceled the danger of the tsunami. But the tremors continue, please pray for our country and for all the people who have been affected. United in our Covenant of Love. From our Shrine in Lima, Peru we greet all the Schoenstatt Shrines asking that you pray for our country. Schoenstatt Family throughout the world, August 16th, 17th, 18th
Peru, August 18thThere was a special celebration at the Shrine in Lima, Peru on the 18th. We went with the desire of expressing gratitude to the Blessed Mother for her protection from the earthquake; we began with the prayer of the Holy Rosary offered for all our brothers who have suffered the loss of a loved one, for the souls of these people, for the injured, and the victims. During the fourth mystery, there was another quake that mobilized some people especially the youth who left the Shrine hurriedly, but after the scare we were able to continue. The Eucharist was presided by Father Jaime Llamas, a diocesan priest, who has made the Covenant of Love with the Blessed Mother. He consoled our hearts and encouraged us not be indifferent to the suffering of our brothers; everyone should join the effort of the parishes that are channeling help. He informed us that our Cardinal, Juan Luis Cipriani said that the Sunday collection of all the parishes and churches of Peru would be to help the victims of the earthquake. After Mass, the contributions to Capital of Grace were burned along with the renewal of our Covenant of Love with the Blessed Mother. Messages that had been sent from different parts of the world from people who were in solidarity with us were placed on the bulletin board to be read. There were also bags of clothing, bottles of water, and non-perishable food that the neighbors and Schoenstatters had brought so it all could be taken to the parish for Mary Helps Peru and its volunteers, who are working with Father Rafael Reátegui, a diocesan priest, who has made the Covenant of Love with the Blessed Mother and who will personally travel to the disaster area. During the fellowship, the coffee tasted very good since it was intensely cold. Thanks to all the Schoenstatt Family who has supported us with prayer and who mobilized to gather collections in their countries with the promise of sending them to Peru. It has been gratifying to receive an immediate response to our plea for prayers. Please continue to pray; because the problem is not over, it will take us a good while to overcome the damage. Schoenstatt Family throughout the world, August 21stSchoenstatt Family of Peru, you can count on our prayers and our contributions to the Capital of Grace, today, tomorrow and in the future.
