ARGENTINA, jkl. With the important participation of over 500 university professionals of different disciplines, coming from this country and from the neighboring countries (Chile and Paraguay) it took place at the Shrine of the Father in New Schoenstatt – Argentina. The VII th Bioethics Conference was organized by the Bioethics Commission Fr. Joseph Kentenich and the Institute of the Sisters of Mary. It was declared of provincial interest.

On this opportunity, the annual conference focused on the Bioethical Issues of the Family in the XXI century and its objectives were: to evaluate the definition of family from the ethics point of view, sustained on the dignity of being a person; to show a coherent model of bioethics; to show the marriage integrity as a unity and as fecundity being the family nucleus and to strengthen the family as a school of bioethics which discovers, embraces, protects reveals and communicates the love for life from conception till natural death.

It is worth noticing the presence of the docents – whose discipline is in the specified area – from several universities in the country, like the Catholic University of Argentina. The scientific, ethical and spiritual views of the family community were analyzed by three panels coordinated by Sr. Dr. Elena Lugo.

The personal dignity and integrity in sexuality

The first panel, focused on "Sexual Identity" was coordinated by Dr Zelmira Botini de Rey who made reference to the ruled views of masculinity and femininity. Dr. Juan Cralos Romi added to the lecture talking about the nature and possible causes of homosexuality in men and women. Dr. Lugo interpreted sexuality as the dignity and integrity of being a person in the encarnate spirit.

The second panel was coordinated by Dr. Jorge Correa Morales (him and his wife are members of the Schoenstatt Family Institute) who talked about techniques, nature and ethics in the married couple’s love and the consequences of separating love’s unity and fecundity. Dr. Ursula C. Basset shared this panel talking about the future of the institution of marriage, the views of legal policies for marriages, unions and other contemporary variations.

A rich family experience as testimonial

The Conference ended with the third panel formed by the superiors of the Rio de la Plata region of the Institute of Schoenstatt Families – Joaquin and Marta Lavini who talked about the pillars of marital fidelity and family harmony with an interesting lecture combining theory and the teachings of the popes, the thoughts of Fr. Kentnich about family and a rich family experience in the form of a testimonial: 37 years of marriage, 6 children and 5 grandchildren. The panel was completed by Fr. Juan Pablo Catoggio referring to the family as the heart of life’s culture. As an ending Sr. Elena Lugo made a synthesis and resolution of the conference and invited the participants to the Shrine to receive the certificates.

Echoes of the press

The newspaper "La Nacion" from Buenos Aires, the most prestigious in the country, made an extensive comment in its religious column on June 13th, 2005 about the Bioethics Conference. The agency FIDES also referred to the subject considered of current interest. Today, Monday June 13th it was learned that the attempt to giving flexibility to artificial insemination and to the tests on human embryos had failed in Italy.
