SHOENSTATT,mkf. It was a private and fleeting visit, more of a pilgrimage to thank the MTA in the Original Shrine for the new Pope and all that was experienced in Rome. Before returning to Chile after participating in the conclave, Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz, Archbishop of Santiago, Chile and president of the Episcopal Council for Latin America (CELAM), visited Schoenstatt on April 29th and 30th. He celebrated a Mass in the Original Shrine and he was willing to have an exclusive interview with the Schoenstatt Press Office.

On April 18th, Pope Benedict XVI received the board of the Episcopal Council for Latin America (CELAM), which was created fifty years ago, in an audience. Those present were the president of CELAM and Archbishop of Santiago, Chile, Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa, as well as Bishop Carlos Aguiar Retes (Mexico), and Bishopr Geraldo Lyrio Rocha (Brazil), both vice-presidents of this organization, also Cardinal Pedro Rubiano Saenz (Colombia), and the secretary general, Monsignor Andres Stanovnik (Argentina). The chairmen of CELAM presented the Pope with the proposed theme for the encounter, as had been communicated in the past months, as possibly: "Disciples of Jesus Christ in the Catholic Church, missionaries of hope for the new evangelization of Latin America and the Carribean at the beginning of the third millenium". Until now, four general conferences of the Latin American Episcopate have been held: Rio de Janeiro in 1955, Medellin in 1968, Puebla in 1979, and Santo Domingo in 1992.

"I was impressed by his ability to listen, which is extraordinary, his humility, because we presented subjects that he still did not know, and the simplicity he had to ask questions about one subject or another". Cardinal Errazuriz indicated.

"The church should be more missionary, the people are thirsty for God," these were also central subjects in the interview in Schoenstatt: Schoenstatt should be more missionary! The people are looking for what we have as an inheritance from our Father, the people are looking for God as Father...It is not enough to pray in the Home Shrine and to auto-educate oneself, important as that may be, we have to go to meet the people, with more courage, uniting ourselves with others... Men are thirsty for God, thirsty for values...

A simple encounter in the Original Shrine

Some persons were a little surprised when at the usual 7:15 a.m. Mass in the Original Shrine, the Cardinal entered accompanied by two Schoenstatt Fathers from Chile - Father Joaquin Alliende Luco and Father Marcelo Aravena. It was a simple Mass, with petitions for the new Holy Father Benedict XVI, the bishops, the church...It ended with the blessing and the "Regina Coeli", which was sung. ( It must be admitted that except for the priests, everyone remained silent during the final prayer recited in Latin...It seemed that the MTA smiled).

A humble and attractive person

During the interview at Mount Sion, he willingly informed us about his experiences in Rome, always referring to the special personality of John Paul II who awakened so much affection and such a sentiment of solitude at his death...He also spoke about the "hour of the Holy Spirit" which is the conclave and the seriousness with which each one had when they voted.Cardinal Errazuriz also referred to the personal qualities of the new Pope, who,"when the conclave ended, instead of going to one of the private rooms, preferred to stay with the cardinals. He is a very humble and attractive person", he said. He also related that at his house he rang the doorbell of each apartment to greet his neighbors, when he returned briefly after being elected Pope. They deserved it, said the new Pope, we lived in the same house for so long. "He was not a worker, he was co-worker of John Paul II. And that is how it is also understood now."
