SCHOENSTATT, Elfriede Schmitt. On the eve of Saturday the 19th of March 2005 the World Youth Day Cross departed on a boat from Espira to Cologne. Since 10:15 a.m. a group of Schoenstatt youth waited at the edge of the Rhine, in Niederwerth. With a poster and multicolored flags from all over the word, which brightened the gray day, they wanted to greet the Cross and the Icon. More Sisters of Mary and couples of the Schoenstatt Word started coming. They were full of expectation on the edge of the Rhine, and tension grew with each boat that was spotted.

"I can see the Cross!" the exclamation (in English) by one of the Sisters electrified everyone, the poster was raised and the flag bearers got into position... but unfortunately it was only a boat carrying containers. But they were not disheartened: Hello containers!"...and they greeted the boat. Several cargo boats passed..no sign of the Enterprise that was carrying the Cross and the Icon.

"It's coming!"

A little before 11:30 a.m., a shout was heard: "It's coming!" The poster with the greeting and the flags were again raised. After a moment a poster on the boat could be read: "Moved by the Cross". Then there was unbounded joy. Signals were made from the edge as well as from the boat...All of sudden everyone held its breath: the boat stopped and wound around.

For a long while it seemed like it was going to berth. The happiness was gigantic...At that emotional moment it was not possible to sing. The Cross was greeted with waving hands, with shouts and applause both from the edge as well as from the boat and the celebration increased even more when three handerkerchiefs with the Schoenstatt logo waved a greeting from the boat. When it resumed its trip many discretely wiped their tears..."The Cross moves us! Or: we were moved by the Cross."
