SOUTH AFRICA, Sr. M. Joanne. The Schoenstatt Family in Johannesburg, South Africa held their diocesan October Weekend from 15-17th October. The weekend was a celebration of 90years Schoenstatt and the opening of the Eucharistic year.
After 90 years there is a danger that one can take even the most important things for granted so the talks and discussions focussed on some of the basic building blocks of Schoenstatt - the Shrine, the Covenant of Love and contributions to the capital of grace. A solemn eucharistic rosary procession on Saturday afternoon marked the beginning of the Eucharistic year. The procession ended with benediction in the Shrine and the blessing and sending out of a number of Pilgrim Mothers.
At tea-time a huge 90th birthday cake was cut and passed around. Balloons are also an important ingredient at a birthday party, the difference being that these were Schoenstatt balloons. Each participant at the weekend gave one contribution to the capital of grace for someone else present.The contribution was written on a slip of paper and placed inside the balloon. Once the cake was cut, everyone caught a balloon and popped it and received their gift of grace. With renewed strength and joy and a sense of Schoenstatt Family, they go into 2005 under the motto "Through the Covenant, living hosts for a better world".
