USA, Sr. Marcia Vinje. On June 29, 2003 the Schoenstatt Family and the diocese of Madison celebrated the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Founder Shrine by Bishop William P. O’Connor, first bishop of Madison. Under a large tent situated in front of the Shrine, Bishop Emeritus William H. Bullock presided at a festive Holy Mass and renewal of the crowning of Mary, Mother Thrice Admirable in the Shrine

The Shrine in Madison is the first one built on American soil. When Father Kentenich, founder of Schoenstatt, arrived in Milwaukee in 1952, he was invited by the Pallottine Fathers to finish their retreat and speak about Schoenstatt. The priests decided with the month to build a shrine on the grounds of Queen of Apostles Seminary, at that time jointly run by the Pallottines and the Diocese of Madison. It was built literally by the priests and seminarians.

The Schoenstatt Sisters worked at the seminary at the time and soon bought land just across the street for their house of formation. When it was necessary to close Queen of Apostles and sell the land, the Pallottines gave the shrine to the Sisters. It was literally put on wheels and transported across the highway to the Sisters’ property on October 10, 1979.

In 1985 the mission of the Founder Shrine was formulated as Educate and Form the American Saint from the Founder Shrine. Soon after, Madison became the site for the headquarters of the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign in the United States. Every Pilgrim MTA that is sent out from here is blessed in the Founder Shrine. In this way the Blessed Mother has spread her Schoenstatt influence to all 50 states.

Preparation: Bricks from Queen of Apostles Seminary, and a pathway of stones on which Father Kentenich would have walked…

A jubilee committee has been working for a year to coordinate the celebration. For weeks members of the Schoenstatt Movement worked to beautify the grounds around the shrine and movement center. From building a gazebo to planting flowers, making banners and photo displays, cleaning, painting and baking, there was a place for everyone’s talents.

The preparation and celebration of this day was marked by a wonderful spirit of cooperation and harmony, a characteristic that has marked the history of the Founder Shrine from its beginning.

Special touches included making a pathway to the gazebo using stones on which the founder would have walked to the shrine at its original site.

Bricks from Queen of Apostles Seminary (which was torn down last year) were used around flower beds. Just a few days before the jubilee, the cornerstone of the seminary was given to the Sisters.

Jubilee Day: The papal blessing in the power house of the diocese

The tent was filled to overflowing by the time the entrance procession began at 2:00 p.m. The honor guard of the Knights of Columbus led the way as they had fifty years previously. Banners of the various Schoenstatt groups were interspersed with delegates carrying symbols of our spiritual jubilee gifts. Sr. M. Adelborg, one of the first Schoenstatt Sisters to come to the diocese, carried the crown for the Shrine The crown had been traveling to home shrines since March. Mary Joyce presented a golden box filled with resolutions for personal self-education, each one’s contribution toward striving to become an American saint. The Butler family brought a large container of blue and gold beads collected as signs of family rosaries. A dozen Schoenstatt Fathers and diocesan priests concelebrated the Mass.

Schoenstatt Father Gerold Langsch, who works with the Schoenstatt Movement in the diocese, welcomed Bishop Bullock and the people, expressing the congratulations of the Pallottine Fathers as well. In his homily Bishop Bullock compared Schoenstatt to a tree, relying on its foundational roots. In this way he referred to the importance of our founder. He continued,

"Father Kentenich offered Mass more than one hundred times at this shrine. What a privilege for us to stand in the very place where he stood, where he lifted up God’s people in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and nourished them from the table of the Lord with the Body and Blood of Christ.

These realities bring joy to our hearts and re-enkindle in all of us a new desire in the new millennium, to acquaint more and more of our laity, priests, and religious with the Schoenstatt spirituality….

"In this Year of the Rosary, in a year when we are in transition from one bishop to another, when we are still struggling to find deep meaning in an era of terrorism, sexual abuse by clergy, in an age when freedom has become the championed word to do what you will regardless of the moral law of God, we need the sane and tested approach of the Schoenstatt movement. I sincerely pray that Mary, Mother Thrice Admirable, will intercede for us in our need.

"The simple shrine stands as a symbol and source of a solid spirituality. May it become more and more what Bishop O’Connor (who dedicated the shrine 50 years ago) desired that it be for generations to come – a powerhouse for the Diocese. May God in his goodness change our hearts, help us to turn over a new leaf, and bring us to Mary, the handmaid and servant of the Lord, to Mary, Mother Thrice Admirable, who denied God nothing."

At the end of Mass the bishop solemnly proclaimed the papal blessing which had been granted to the Schoenstatt Family for this jubilee.

 A Crown for a Queen

After Mass there was an hour break for refreshments and socializing in the park around the Shrine. There one could find cake decorated with photos of the shrine, and Filipino ethnic foods. The conference hall in the Movement Center was set up with numerous photo displays featuring the history of the Shrine, life around the Shrine, Movement activities, and Schoenstatt in the diocese. A puppet show for and by children was available, and people could purchase religious goods.

At 4:30 p.m. we reconvened in the tent for a program of witnesses and a power point presentation with many photos. Interspersed with historical facts were people who shared how the shrine had affected their lives and their families. After this the crowning ceremony began. The prayers focused on the Magnificat as an outline for all for which we are grateful these past 50 years. Bishop Bullock used our founder’s words to proclaim our MTA queen. Then delegates were invited into the Shrine for the actual coronation while closed circuit televising of the event could be seen in the tent. The diocesan leader couple, Jeff and Barbara Brochtrup, did the honors of placing the crown on the MTA picture as we sang "My Queen, My Mother." The ceremony ended with the bishop’s blessing and a crowning song written by Barbara Brochtrup.

Echoes: "I used to go to Schoenstatt Camp as a boy…"

Many people came who formerly had contact with the shrine, including a former seminarian who had helped build the shrine came. The principal of the local high school, which lent a stage for the Mass, told that he used to go to Schoenstatt Camp as a boy and his parents had belonged to a Schoenstatt group. The young man from a neighboring parish who set up the sound system reminisced that his mother belonged to Schoenstatt, and he used to come regularly to the Shrine.

One person who knew our founder expressed at the close of the day, "You could sense the presence of Father. Whenever he would appear, all tension would disappear and everyone was united. This day I felt the Cor unum in Patre."
