ARGENTINA, mpl/mkf. Social Schoenstatt: a subject that is touching the conscience of Schoenstatters more and more throughout the world; social commitment, the active solidarity with the most needy cannot be omitted in a Movement that is oriented on Mary, the woman who always was and is close to the poor throughout the centuries. In its social commitment, Schoenstatt is motivated by the passion for the dignity of each human being and the desire to create a Covenant culture in all spheres of society. The purpose of the soybean campaign in solidarity is not only to feed the hungry; rather, it teaches how to cook and eat a variety of nutritious foods, and to gather the family, allying itself with MARY, the educator, around the family table.

Argentina formerly "produced grain for the world" and is presently the country with a "record crop", however, thousands of men and women are not assured of survival or of meeting their daily needs. Specialists estimate that one out of five Argentinean children are malnourished. Founded in the year 2002 in the midst of the crisis in Argentina by Jorge Simmermacher, his wife Patricia, along with Martin Poli and S. Zervino, the objective of the Soybean Campaign is to donate soybeans in order to add more producers to the solidarity campaign by donating part of their crop, and to taking the MTA on a new visitation to feed body and soul. Many of the missionaries of the Rosary Campaign throughout Argentina have joined the mission of the Soybean Campaign, which is to help promote a family atmosphere in the home and to provide better nutrition for those who cook. "We strive for pregnant women’s intake to be 200 grams of soybean in their daily diet and 50 grams for children, which provides the necessary protein," the organizers share. However, the mission is more than just combating malnutrition.

Around the family table

"Many families have become accustomed to going to community centers to eat," Jorge Simmermacher explains. "We want to show them the value of eating as a family around a family table."

It is about re-evaluating the essential mission of the woman, who is the soul of each home allied with and in the image of MARY, to aspire to be the nucleus of family life centered on values and in service. It is not just about distributing soybeans; on the contrary, it is also about training families. As a result, they will learn how to use an inexpensive resource of excellent quality, and at the same, they will to learn about God and the Schoenstatt Family. It is about helping them to obtain a better quality of life for themselves while sharing work and prayer as an authentic family.

Presently the Soybean Campaign reaches about 10,000 people of both sexes: 70% children of ages 3 to 15 in age, 20% pregnant women, elderly, and10% housewives without economic means. The Soybean Campaign exists in San Luis, Mendoza, Salta, Tucumán, Córdoba, La Rioja, Catamarca, Corrientes, Rawson, Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires y Chaco.

How does the Soybean Campaign "work"?

The Soybean Campaign is developed through a set group of Schoenstatters in each area of the country who takes responsibility for it.

The soybeans arrive cleaned and divided. They are not just distributed; the mothers are also invited and are taught how to use them. It is the task of the group responsible for the Soybean Campaign to identify the poorest people and to invite them to learn.

The commission from Buenos Aires provides instructors, who teach them how to process the soybeans, unless there are people in the area who know how to do it. A certain "mysticism" is included in this effort (sheltering, trust, community…) so that it will be somewhat Marian and for their best interest.

Through the collaboration of some Schoenstatt Families, many have helped place10,000 kg of soybeans into 1 kg bags, and helped distribute to the twenty Schoenstatt Family Branches, who have volunteered to participate in the Campaign. Trucking companies, some who have given us a discount on the cost, transport the soybeans,.

Eva Garcia, the instructor, sets up at a location, where she trains the local instructors. The have a short catechesis, stressing the role of Mary. She is considered as an ALLY in this task, and the work to be carried out is entrusted to her through an opening prayer before the training session. The instructors teach how to cook the soybeans, and they demonstrate making soybean milk and juices for the neighborhood, school, community, or personal feeding centers. They distribute the processed soybeans.

The training course lasts for two days. The SOYBEANS are provided regularly by the local instructors of each area who process and distribute the processed SOYBEANS to the housewives, so they can make different economical meals with a high protein content in community, school, or organization kitchens. In this way, they form groups of mothers who share the work and prayer. They also experience the graces of the Shrine that Mary gives for the glory of Her Son.

The training sessions

They have developed a format for the training sessions. A trained instructor (usually a missionary of the Rosary Campaign or a member of the Mothers’ Branch, or it can be any person who is willing to help) gathers a group of pregnant women or women who have children; they are given the bags they need for a week. While they are preparing the soybeans, they pray the rosary or a spiritual talk is given. Then they are instructed to share what they have learned with their family.

Santiago J. Zervino, one of the founders of the initiative, summarizes the project by saying: "We want to provide nourishment of body and soul to our brothers, who are most in need. It is not just about distributing the soybean throughout the country; rather it is about training people to learn how to use a high quality inexpensive resource, and at the same time, for them to learn about God and the Schoenstatt Family. It is about helping them to obtain a better quality of life for themselves and to share the work and prayer as an authentic family."

The Soybean Campaign is an initiative of the Schoenstatt Apostolic Movement who wants to make a cultural change in the nourishment of families who need help in obtaining their daily sustenance.
