BRAZIL, Sr. M. Silvana Pin. "With João Pozzobon from the Shrine at the Vatican!" This was the theme for the 24th anniversary of João Luiz Pozzobon’s death. The three-day commemoration, from 24 to 26 June, was held at the Chapel of Our Lady of Graces next to the Museum House. Large groups of people gathered at João’s mortal remains to pray the rosary and meditate on his life. On 27 June, a large group of pilgrims departed from the entrance to his house to trace the steps João took every day when he was in Santa Maria to attend Mass at the Tabor Shrine. He made his last pilgrimage to the Shrine 24 years ago and this took him to the Eternal Father’s arms alongside his beloved "Pilgrim Mother." The group went on pilgrimage, following João’s footsteps and praying the Rosary as he did, meditating on the mysteries in the life of Jesus which were connected to the teachings João left behind: "Mother does not deny me anything but I also never denied her anything!" This year the participation of a group of pilgrims from Uruguay, many Sisters of Mary, representatives from the "Men’s Rosary" prayer group, members of the Schoenstatt Movement as well as João Pozzobon’s family and loyal friends all enriched the occasion. Their faith challenged the bitter coldTheir faith challenged the bitter cold that chilled the body but not the spirit as they went on pilgrimage to the "poor pilgrim’s" source of holiness: the Tabor Shrine. At the start of the pilgrimage, Fr. Argemiro Ferracioli encouraged everyone to place their intentions and petitions in the "empty suitcase" he used to take the process of Pozzobon’s beatification to Rome and which would be used in the procession. At the place where João Pozzobon was run over, Fr. Argemiro recalled João’s enormous suffering resulting from his many injuries following the accident and also recalled his last words: "mercy, mercy, mercy…" The Tabor Shrine bell then struck solemnly welcoming everyone on our Blessed Mother’s behalf. The Pilgrim Mother was placed in front of the shrine, on the spot where João used to kiss the ground upon his arrival at the shrine as a sign of humility. Fr. Argemiro said that João Pozzobon made a note of this in his spiritual daily order: kiss the ground five times as a sign of humility. There, beside our Mother and God’s servant, the pilgrims also did the same. The pilgrimage came to an end at the Tabor Shrine with the celebration of Mass thanking God for the many wonders experienced through the life of the heroic sons that the Queen of Heroic Childlikeness has educated in the 60 years that she has been among us in Santa Maria… Translation: Sarah-Leah Pimentel, Pretoria, South Africa |
