SCHOENSTATT, mkf. December 12: Feast day of the Patroness of the Americas, Our Lady of Guadalupe, a liturgical Holy Day for both continents, and this very same day is the birthday of John Pozzobon... a day celebrated in the whole hemisphere and beyond, and this December 12, 2008, also in the Original Shrine at Schoenstatt; it seems that the coincidence of dates is more than just coincidence.

Mesoamerica, the "New World", 1521: The capital city of the Aztec empire falls under the Spanish forces. Less than twenty years later, nine million of the inhabitants of the land became Christians. What happened in those times that produced such an incredible and historically unprecedented conversion? In 1531 a "Lady from Heaven" appeared to a humble Native American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the Ever-Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth. Her face was that of a Native American, and she spoke to Juan Diego in the native Nahuatl language… She made a request for a church to be built on the site, and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested a sign of her, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or question to the Church's local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop (these flowers would not normally be blooming at that time of the year). After complying with the Bishop's request for a sign, she also left an image of herself for us imprinted miraculously on the Juan Diego’s tilma, a poor quality cactus cloth that should have deteriorated in twenty years, but shows no sign of decay and still defies all scientific explanations of its origin… The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is the second most visited Roman Catholic shrine in the world.

John Pozzobon, born December 12, 1904, would become an instrument of the Mother Thrice Admirable, Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt by making her picture of grace become one of the most popular in Latin America and beyond, in addition to spreading Schoenstatt and the Covenant of Love to the ends of the world. Thanks to the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign of the Pilgrim Mother that he initiated in 1950 at the Tabor Shrine in Santa Maria, Brazil, and now millions of families in over 110 countries are visited by the Pilgrim Mother who brings the graces of the Schoenstatt Shrine in each new visitation. The Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign of the Pilgrim MTA opened Schoenstatt for the people from all walks of life… Father Kentenich, who always emphasized the importance of a healthy, strong popular devotion, gave his blessing to the Campaign and called it the new pastoral for these modern times.

A small picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe and several Pilgrim MTAs – from Germany, Argentina, and Brazil –were united on the communion rail of the Original Shrine the afternoon of December 12th and bore witness to the meaning of this day.

An international Rosary

It was a special joy for all those present that Hermann Arendes, who accompanied John Pozzobon for many years, was present for this rosary and read quotes from John Pozzobon that were part of the meditations of the rosary. With songs in German and Spanish and the rosary prayed in German, Spanish, Croatian, and Portuguese, the Original Shrine seemed to resound with the love, internationality, and creativity that is so typical for the Campaign. Germans, Mexicans, Argentineans, Brazilians, and Ecuadorians were present along with Brothers of Mary, Schoenstatt Sisters, members of the Family Movement, the Girls’ and the Boys’ Youth: a family moment of missionary spirit that unites us all.

The rosary was said for all the Campaign’s missionaries, and all those who receive a visit from the Pilgrim Mother.

Smile of a Saviour are mirror'd in Thee, Glimpses of Heaven in thy light we see…

The day after, Saturday, December 13th, a small group gathered in the Original Shrine as it does every Saturday at half past five to pray the Rosary for all the world’s needs, the church’s, the Schoenstatt Movement’s, and the particular intentions sent to the Press Office – a desperate job hunt, babies and small children with cancer, leukemia, and difficult surgeries ahead, marriages in crisis…

The Schoenstatt Family of Rawson, Argentina, celebrating the 15th anniversary of their Shrine of Promise, was specially remembered. A picture of their Shrine was on the altar during the Rosary.

"Smile of a Saviour are mirror'd in Thee, Glimpses of Heaven in thy light we see…" says an old Christmas carol about the Star of Bethlehem… More and more people rediscover on the website at Schoenstatt.de the small golden star (as well as the invitation on the website by the Campaign, and the Boys’ Youth in Brazil) to send the names of loved ones to Schoenstatt to be placed as little stars by the manger in the Original Shrine on the Holy Night. And who is privileged to get a glimpse of what is written on the stars, can see a Savior’s Smile, can see glimpses of heaven in the love, confidence, and longing mirrored in these "stars"? As in every year, they will be brought to the Original Shrine on Christmas Eve…and then, later, to the tomb of Father Kentenich, during the Midnight Mass in the Adoration Church.

They are – without a doubt – the most beautiful stars to shine by the manger… and the light from the manger will shine in them.
