SOUTH AFRICA, Sarah-Leah Pimentel. It was with great joy that the South African Schoenstatt Family in Johannesburg received two groups of German Schoenstatt Youth pilgrims on their way to World Youth Day in Sydney. On 5 July and again on 7 July, the German Youth and their backpacks found their way to our Shrine. After picking them up at the airport on two chilly winters’ mornings and travelling to the Shrine in an old school bus, the groups were greeted with a warm breakfast. After breakfast, the Sisters and members of the local Schoenstatt Movement gave the groups a short talk on the origins of Schoenstatt in South Africa and the work that we do within parishes and the archdiocese of Johannesburg. On the 7th of July we had a little extra time to hear about the way in which the members of the German group live out their Covenant of Love. Their testimony reminded us that although we come from different countries and speak different languages, we all have one common goal, to live out our Covenant of Love for the Youth of the World, made on 10 August 2005 at the Youth Festival in Germany. We are one familySince time was short, the groups hurriedly prepared the readings and songs for Mass. It was wonderful to hear German being spoken in our little shrine and when the group burst into song after communion with "Dios te Salve Maria," the South Africans who were present joined in enthusiastically. After Mass, there was just enough time for a few short conversations, a game or two and a hearty lunch, before the groups climbed back onto the bus that would take them to the airport and onto the next stop in their World Youth Day adventure. Now, a month later, it is all over and the South African Schoenstatt Family hopes that the German youth had a wonderful time at WYD in Sydney and have hundreds of stories to tell their friends and families back home. Their stop in South Africa may have been short, but it was enough to restore old friendships, form new ones and be reminded once again that we are ONE FAMILY! |
