GERMANY, Juan Barbosa. For most of the people from Trier today, Tuesday, June 17th, transpired with its usual rhythm until something began to "ring" differently… At exactly 4:00 p.m the bells of Saint Anthony Church began to ring in a fervent and measured manner, indicating that this was a very special day for the entire Diocese: A Holy Mass was celebrated in honor of the closing of the beatification process for Joseph Engling at the Diocesan level.
That is how the Postulator Father Jan Korycki (a Pallotine priest) and the Vice-postulators, Father Vinzenz Reinhar (a Pallotine priest) and Father Joachim Schmiedl (a Schoenstatt Father) completed the rich and demanding task of this important first stage. What a great joy for the Schoenstatt Movement, for the Pallotine Fathers, for the Church and for all of us, who are also Church!
When the Sisters of Mary arrived, responding to the call of the bells; they impressed those attending with their fine bearing. The faces of more than 80 participants who entered the Church were filled with happiness and those who were waiting to enter were infected with this happiness and with anticipation of what would take place in the interior of the Church of Saint Anthony.
The five continents were present!
People from the 20 countries from the five continents (Poland, France, India, Switzerland, Belgium, Croatia, Australia, Kenya, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, United States, Chile, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Hungary, Italy, and Germany) and a large number of Germans could not miss the appointment at Trier. You could not be absent from an event of such magnitude when it is about someone whose true passion in life was to be united with his fellow man.
Father Abbé Fleury, France; and Monsignor Dr. Klaus Peters, delegate of the Diocese for the process and 10 other priests were present, which made it a con-celebration of 15 priests, and they participated with the solemnity this celebration required.
The altar was adorned with the presence of a large picture of Joseph Engling on top of 11 photos and more than 400 completed, signed and sealed pages with all the steps that the diocesan process requires.
Of course his beloved Mother and Queen was present in the four Pilgrim MTA’s at the foot of the main altar. She can never miss an appointment…
"I want to become all things to all men, and Mary’s very own"
During the homily (which the Spanish speaking and English speaking people could follow thanks to a translation that they received), the Vice-postulator, Father, Professor Joachim Schmiedl, ( a Schoenstatt Father) cited Jospeh Engling’s personal ideal, which is cited in the title, within the context of his personality: "I want to become all things to all men.
As proof of this, he pointed out things that showed this profound love for others and for his beloved MTA, who he turned to innumerable times during his life He didn’t receive the Iron Cross because of his bravery against the enemy, but rather because of his selfless service to his comrades. The new commandment of love for God and neighbor was the great theme of the last years of Joseph Engling’s life."
Another clear sign of what he stood for in life was unity – Father Schmiedl continued to explain – "That the process was picked up again we owe to the Pallotines and for that I would like to very cordially thank them now. This day is therefore also a sign of inner Catholic ecumenism. After decades of working next to each other, we have completed this process – which above all is about proving the on-going veneration of Joseph Engling – together. I see in it a sign of reconciliation, which happens best by way of common apostolic projects."
At the conclusion of this phase, there was a warm round of applause expressing the approval and joy that spontaneously surged among the faithful. " We are convinced that Joseph Engling has brought about reconciliation in many ways since his death. The most obvious is the understanding for one another in the venues of his birthplace and place of death. The relationship between Germans and Poles, between Germans and the French have been improved by a soldier of the First World War, who fought at both fronts."
Father Schmiedl continued to cite different examples, not only within the Boys Youth, but also in the Girls’ Youth, where many important things have been accomplished by always acting in the reconciliatory manner of Joseph Engling.
But Joseph Engling’s example was not only decisive at the level of the lay people. Father Schmiedl said that "If we were to mutually tell the stories of our lives with Joseph Engling, we would probably be very surprised. In all the Schoenstatt communities – and also, at least in the older generation of the Pallotines – Joseph Engling’s life was a decisive example in the history of the vocations of a large part of its members".
He concluded the Homily with a great petition: "Jose Engling, guide many youth from the entire world on their road of holiness. Amen".
The petitions were expressed in different languages and the Choir of the Sisters of Mary accompanied the celebration with their always fine and delicate touch.
Father Jan Korycki (a Pallotine Father), Postulator and Main Celebrant, closed the celebration with a warm farewell inviting all those present to follow the example of Joseph Engling by be transparencies of his personal ideal: "I want to become all things for all men, Mary’s very own".
We prayed the beatification prayer for Joseph Engling together.
After Mass, Father Joachim Schmiedl shared some of the greetings that had arrived from all parts of the world.
The Family always celebrates close to the Shrine
In its long tradition, on the way to its 100th anniversary, the Schoenstatt Family cannot finish a celebration far from the Shrine. It is as if "something was missing" if we do not gather to celebrate in the shadow of the Shrine. So after the Holy Mass we went to the Shrine of Trier, whose Sisters, who are very familiar with this reality, had prepared for this event.
The interior of the Shrine was impeccable as always, and beneath the shade of the trees there were tables and chairs so that everyone would be comfortable. Once again their welcoming touch was present and the objective was accomplished. The Mother and Queen had her little children around Her.
Trier had dawned as just another day. At dusk, it was no longer the same.
