SCHOENSTATT, mkf/Melissa Ann Schmid. March Covenant Day celebrated in Holy Week, the feast of St. Joseph – and name day of Father Kentenich- , will be celebrated on March 15th. Easter approaching with cold and winter storms: this year’s early Easter date also makes for some interesting experiences around the Original Shrine.

The road up to Mount Schoenstatt right now not only offers the adventures of a bumpy pothole road, but also a view of entire parts of the woods by the wayside looking as if a giant had trampled down the trees like matches. Since last week, the damage done by winter storm, "Emma," is being cleaned up in and around Schoenstatt’s woody areas. Seems a miracle that no damage was done to the houses and only a few trees blocked the roads for some hours on Saturday, March 1.

It was a "quiet" weekend with the diocesan leaders from the German Schoenstatt Girls’ Youth meeting in House Sonnenau, a retreat for Schoenstatt Mothers in House Marienland, and an informative meeting for families on the Father Kentenich Farm, the center of the Schoenstatt Federation of Families.

An engineer from Santiago, Chile, member of the Schoenstatt Federation of Families, used the Sunday off from his work assignment in Duesseldorf to travel to Schoenstatt and see the Original Shrine for the first time, the tomb of Father Kentenich, and so many other holy places. Two young people from Brazil were happy to find Portuguese-speaking people at Schoenstatt as they arrived there Sunday afternoon without any idea of how to find their way.

The Pilgrims’ Church opens wide its doors

On Sunday March 9, 2008, some 1,500 people gathered in Schoenstatt’s Pilgrims’ Church to enjoy an afternoon with The Mainzer Hofsänger, the internationally acclaimed men’s choir from Mainz. The purpose of the concert was to raise funds for cancer research in Rheinland-Pfalz as well as for a new organ in one of the Vallendar parishes. The choir performed a repertoire of various religious songs dating from over the last 200 years singing in Latin, German, and English. It was quite a surprise for the audience since the choir is more popular for its carnival repertoire. However, the performance still impressed the packed church and won the choir a standing ovation. The event was a wonderful opportunity for Schoenstatt to open wide its doors to the mass public, many of whom have not had previous encounters with Schoenstatt. During the closing remarks, the announcement was made that the event was successful in raising €30,000, which was even more than was anticipated. That was music to the ears!

Holy Week preparations

The feast of St. Joseph will be celebrated on March 15th, instead of its usual date, the 19th, and is sort of a prelude to Holy Week this year with several pilgrims groups from different countries scheduled to arrive – from USA, Spain, Ecuador… all who will most likely meet for the 18th Covenant Mass!
