SCHOENSTATT, mkf. Those who want to experience one of the favorite activities at the Spiritual Center of the next German Catholic Day held in Osnabrück, Germany do not need to go as far as Osnabrück.  Schoenstatt also provides a regular opportunity to share in the Illuminated Rosary, a way of praying the rosary originating in Latin America bringing together the intentions of the whole world as well as personal prayers coming from the daily needs and joys of each person.  Hence, the theme: God waits for me personally, for my worries, requests, thanks and suffering.  At the Illuminated Rosary on February 23rd, two roses and two candles were lit especially for the two boys ages 12 and 13 who a few days before were hit by a train in nearby Andernach, Germany and killed instantly. The third was lit for the train’s engineer.

With the rose and the candle lit personally, the prayer intention is brought to God accompanied by the prayers of all those present. From rose to rose, from candle to candle, from intention to intention, a crown of roses and shining candles slowly forms a chain of solidarity.  The Illuminated Rosary is a global prayer, and for this reason, those who speak other languages are invited to participate in their native tongue – a very simple way to pray together with people of all nationalities in Schoenstatt’s international place of pilgrimage.  This time prayers and Ave Marias resounded in German, English, and Croatian. And the main actors of this Illuminated Rosary were not the members of the Parish Pastoral Council of Rüsselsheim, Germany, who were on Mount Moriah for a private meeting and decided to join in. Nor were these the "regular visitors" from Vallendar and the nearby cities.  Rather they were children: siblings belonging to a Croatian family of nine who live in Germany and receive the Pilgrim Mother.  The children’s grandmother had returned to Croatia where she heard about the Apostolic Movement of Schoenstatt.  When she visited her children in Germany, she expressed the wish to visit Schoenstatt once.  Having seen the posters advertising the Illuminated Rosary, they decided to come along.

Maybe they do not really know how to pray, but once they see the rose, they will want to…

If it had not been for the children, this day’s prayer experience would have been quite uneventful since the majority of people present just listened.  Because of their simplicity, children are closer to God and have a personal and trusting relationship with him.  The two older children were asked if they could hand out the roses.  Without any hesitation, they said, "yes," and asked, "What must we do?"  The little boy himself gave the answer and said to his little sister:  "Maybe they do not really know how to pray, but once they see the rose, they will want to…" The younger children organized themselves as to who would hand a rose to each person who came forward to pray their intention together with the corresponding "Hail Mary."  Enthusiastically, they ran eagerly in the direction of the candles and lit them.  One image really imprinted itself in the hearts of those who were there: with an welcoming smile, the girl stood alone in front of the microphone and waited with a rose in her hand, waited for the faithful who were present.  How many times does Our Lord wait for us with a rose in his hand until finally we go in search of him and tell him all the things that move and burden our hearts, what is difficult, and goes beyond our human capacities?  And how many times does he wait in vain, when he wanted to give us so much?

"That all wars can come to an end, because they are horrible," prayed the oldest son of this Croatian family; he at nine or ten years obviously too young to have lived the horrors of the war in Croatia, but his parents did. And: "That children are not born with too many or too few legs and arms."  His aunt later shares that there is a baby in the neighborhood with deformed limbs…

The first prayers by the adults were timid, but they became more fluent and were saturated with the real events of daily life again and again expressed in prayers: for children who will make their First Holy Communion this year, for the seriously ill, for work and education, for a house for the Sisters of Mary in Romania, for a troubled marriage, for the novices to the Sisters of Mary whose reception will take place next Sunday, for educators and all those who work with the elderly and are overworked because of a shortage of specialized staff, for the woman who missed an important meeting because of a train strike.

Gabriele Sudermann commented, "Those who did not say anything were also present.  I still remember how, years ago, when we first began the Illuminated Rosary, it was hard for me to think of someone for whom I could pray.  We also had to learn how to be more concrete in our reflections and to take our personal lives to God in prayer.  It is a completely different dimension."

The next Illuminated Rosary will take place on 5 April at 4:00 PM

Further Education Course for priests from Erfurt, Germany

From the 18th to the 22nd of February, a Further Education Course for 45 priests belonging to the diocese of Erfurt took place in House Marienau, belonging to the Schoenstatt Fathers. They were accompanied by their dicesan bishop, Bishop Warnke., and Auxiliary bishop Hauke. Fr Lenz from the Pallotine Faculty of Theology, conducted the training. Not only did the priests feel welcome in Schoenstatt, but shortly after they arrived, they asked many questions about the place and the Apostolic Schoenstatt Movement. On the evening of 19 February, they climbed Mount Schoenstatt and visited the Adoration Church, Fr. Kentenich’s tomb and the Fr. Kentenich House so that they could learn more about Schoenstatt.

Thank you Sr. Lisann

A group of Belgian students, the celebration of a 70th birthday, young people from various countries: in other words, normal activity in House Sonnenau on the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of Sr. Lisann, who over the years gave the house its distinctive character. "Even today, when I think about Schoenstatt, I miss Sr Lisann," wrote Alan Cabello from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, on the anniversary of Sr. Lisann’s death. "In Schoenstatt, people pass through so quickly, but she was always there!" Sunday Mass on 24 February in the Pilgrim Church was celebrated for the soul of Sr. Lisann. Fr. Ludwig Gütlein, the director for the Girls’ Youth, was the main celebrant; Fr. Widmaier, the director of Pilgrimage, and Fr. Nothen, the Mount Sion rector, concelebrated In his homily, Fr. Güthlein took the Gospel for the day and linked it to the story of the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well and tied the dialogue contained in these stories to the concern for natural needs in religious experience, paying particular attention to Sr. Lisann’s life. Many people participated in this Mass, which was followed by lunch in House Sonnenau and was attended by family members, former and present employees, youth, many Sisters of Mary, including the new director (??) for the Girls’ Youth, Sr. M. Anastasia, and many others. The fountain at the entrance to the house, a photograph of Sr. Lisann and the visitor’s book remind of her and the atmosphere that permeated throughout House Sonnenau and which remains visible and tangible, through the people who continue her work in the house.
