AUSTRALIA, Father Marcelo Aravena. Be part of our Schoenstatt celenbration with the WYD cross & icon! With this motto the icon of the Blessed Mother was welcomed for the second time on Sunday morning, January 13th, at Mount Schoenstatt in the heart of the Australian Schoenstatt. Hundreds of people, youth adults, and children were there to venerate and to greet these symbols which are a foretaste of the World Youth Day celebration in July 2008.

Father John Evans, the leader of the Schoenstatt National Commission that is charge of preparing the Schoenstatt celebration for World Youth Day, presided the Eucharistic celebration beneath a sun of 35 degrees, but this did not diminish the participation and the enthusiasm of the faithful. In his homily, he stressed the importance of the cross of the Lord and the presence of Mary in the life of each Christian and he also emphasized the privilege of having the symbols for World Youth Day at Mount Schoenstatt. Schoenstatt wants to be and make itself present at the most important ecclesial event of the year 2008 for the Australian Church. The cross and the icon carry many graces with them from many holy places in the world – and they were also at the Original Shrine, Father’s tomb in October 2004, as well as several Schoenstatt Shrines in Germany, Switzerland, Burundi…The cross was present in the World Youth Day with John Paul II, accompanied by the icon at the World Youth Day of Cologne, which the first one with Benedict XVI; these symbols carry memories of the faith of thousands and thousands of youth.

An international and multi-ethnic celebration

The piety and the love for the cross and the Blessed Mother were transformed into a demonstration of faith of the multicolor of races, cultures and languages. It was impressive to see how the faith around one Lord unites, gives joy, awakens creativity and gives the strength to enthusiastically continue on the way to offer the Gospel of Jesus to the youth of the world.

The celebration consisted of an enriching, non-stop program with adoration, prayer, reflections, processions, vigils, workshops and of course with barbecues throughout all day and night on Sunday the 13th until Monday, the 14th when the symbols left Mount Schoenstatt to continue on its pilgrimage of motivation of the youth with a preview of World Youth Day with Benedict XVI next July in Sydney. In summary, it was a gift and an abundant flow of graces for those who came to visit the cross and the icon.
