USA, Martha Selaya. Miami: The city’s nickname, the Magic City, comes from its rapid growth and from the winter visitors who would remark how much the city had grown from one year to the next that it was like "magic." In terms of demographics, it is a city of great diversity… a window into the world reflected in its statistics: 34.1% Cuban, 20.2% African American, 18.3 % non-Hipanic, 5.6% Nicaraguan, 5.0% Haitian, 3.6% Puerto Rican and 3.3% Honduran, and 1.5% Asian in addition to many other nationalities and groups. Miami was also the first stop Father Kentenich’s made in his first visit to the U. S. in 1948. It’s in this magic city where a daring Schoenstatt community hopes to one day see a new Shrine of the Mother Thrice Admirable, Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt.

Some years ago, Schoenstatt of South Florida Inc., a non-profit corporation, purchased a 5-acre farm with a small house in an agricultural area called the Redlands in South Miami.  So far, it has not been possible to get that property zoned for a Religious Facility in order to build the Schoenstatt Shrine.  But hope is still high.

On January 20th, remembering what that day means to Schoenstatt, the Miami Schoenstatt family crowned the Blessed Mother as the Queen of "YES" at Casa Schoenstatt.  After the Mass celebrated by Rev. Fernando Isern who a year ago did his Covenant of Love, and using the same shovel used for the groundbreaking at the youngest Schoenstatt Shrine in the USA, at Crete, Nebraska, they buried a box with the newest architectural drawings for which they are again reapplying for a Zoning change in order to build the first South Florida Schoenstatt Shrine. Crowning means, in the spirit of Schoenstatt’s Founding Document, apply gentle force on the Blessed Mother…  Matias Hualpa who has been the coordinator of the boys youth group and who recently entered in the St. John Vianney Seminary in South Miami also pushed the shovel to bury one of the bricks many members of the Schoenstatt Family are dedicating as capital of grace.  It was especially moving to see Susana Cattini in her wheelchair bravely enduring her Multiple Sclerosis also pushing some dirt in this place where the Schoenstatt Shrine will one day soon stand proudly.  In the crowning prayer, they asked the Blessed Mother to "intercede for a ‘Yes’ to the project of our future Shrine.  We crown you praying:  "Full of love and trust we want to build your Shrine.  Give us the grace; show us the place that is already chosen in the plans of God the Father.  Amen."

Meeting Archbishop John Clement Favalora

Sister Marie Day from Waukesha, Wisconsin visited Miami earlier in January; it was her second longer stay in Miami. The Schoenstatt Movement has asked the Schoenstatt Sisters to come more frequently and work with the Movement. During Sister Marie's visit, there was an Archdiocese luncheon to which Sister attended with some representatives of the Schoenstatt Movement.  There they were fortunate to introduce her to Msgr. Hennessy who is an Archdiocesan Official, the Moderator of the Curia, a Consultant, and belongs to the Presbyterial Council. Sr. Marie also met Archbishop John C. Favalora of the Miami Archdiocese.  Both of them know Schoenstatt and expressed how pleased they were to meet Sister Marie, and know that the Sisters were working at Casa Schoenstatt in the Archdiocese.
