SCHOENSTATT, mkf. Beneath a starry sky and very cold wintry-like weather, the Covenant of Love was renewed in the Original Shrine, the original source of graces, united spiritually to all of you in Shrines, Wayside Shrines, and Home Shrines all over the world. Around the Original Shrine, it was the end of an activity filled day, which was experienced in the unity of the many people who gathered to celebrate and to renew the Covenant of Love. The 18th of each month is truly a global day of graces shared throughout the world by being united as a family and being at home in our common home, the Shrine.

"It is wonderful to think, that in spite of the weather, this life that surges from the Shrines is celebrated around the world," commented Tita Rio, from Paraná, Argentina. "Here it was just the opposite, the oppressive heat was felt this weekend, and just when the Mass was about to begin there was a cool breeze that brought relief on this beautiful 18th that was a gift of God to those of us who open our hearts to the Schoenstatt Movement."

"It was a different and wonderful sensation, when you referred to the places, houses, mountains, and one knows that we have stepped on those holy places, that we have experienced being beneath that starry sky, or that we have seen the resplendence going up to Mount Tabor, on an Easter, that we have enjoyed the wind, the sun, feeling of the presence of God the Father, and also the presence of the Blessed Mother, Father Joseph, Joao, and here in Argentina, with Roberto, at 8:00 p.m. in the Shrine of Belgrano, "Tabor of Mary, heart of the city, we have united all the Schoenstatt Family, to renew our Covenant of Love with our Mother and Queen", writes Marta Goldemberg who was in Schoenstatt in April of 2007. "If we are physically far away, every 18th, every time we visit a Shrine, every day, we are united as brothers and sisters, and the mission that Father gave each one of his spiritual children is ablaze anew."

Several activities at Schoenstatt

One of the highlights of this 18th at Schoenstatt was the perpetual consecration of the first Course of Mothers Federation from Portugal. But there were many other activities throughout the weekend such as:

    • In Sonnenau, a retreat for young couples who had participated in a marriage preparation course during Easter,
    • A preparation retreat for the youth who will go on pilgrimage to Sydney next year to participate in World Youth Day 2008, there were about fifty German Boys’ and Girls’ Youth and other youth who wanted to travel with Schoenstatt,
    • In the Families’ House there was an Advent retreat for couples,
    • In House Marienland there was a retreat for mothers,
    • And in House Marienaul a retreat for priests ended while in House Mount Moriah another retreat began!

Important events around the world

In Bujumbura, Burundi, a group from the Mothers Branch sealed their commitment with Schoenstatt during the Pilgrim Mass, and each one of the ladies received a Schoenstatt handkerchief as a symbol of preparation for the Covenant of Love. They made their commitment with enormous joy in the presence of the Third International Auxiliary MTA of the Rosary Campaign that has been visiting in Burundi since November 11th. The mothers didn’t want to miss taking a group picture with the Auxiliary! (LINK to article)

In the Shrine of La Loma, Paraná, the Signs of Warmth group from the Family Work, wanted to the give their Covenant of Love with the Blessed Mother to the family after a long time of preparation. "The Shrine and the surrounding area was full of pilgrims who came to celebrate Father’s birthday with this fraternal encounter in the renewal of the Covenant of Love," says Tita Rios. The same day hundreds of missionaries renewed their missionary commitment. Missionaries from the interior came with their Pilgrim MTA’s, one by one they developed their activities, and they shared the work the Blessed Mother is doing in their areas.

The School of God the Father in Mendoza, Argentina celebrated its 15th Anniversary on this day. For 15 years, it has been educating children and youth according to the pedagogy of Father Kentenich.

"It was also a day of much joy for us in Bariloche," says Isabel Frei, "A group of Schoenstatt Mothers met with Sister Catalina Walsh yesterday, first we had a beautiful Mass in Carmelo, and then about fifteen mothers had lunch, then we went singing to a Wayside Shrine of the Blessed Mother to pray, we renewed our consecration and we prayed for the prompt beatification of the Founding Father, then we had an excellent talk on Loyalty, the meeting lasted until 6:00 p.m. Today there was a very beautiful Mass where the Pilgrim MTA stood out on the altar and what touched me was that all the people prayed for Father Kentenich. The majority of the parishioners do not belong to Schoenstatt."

A large group of Mothers from Ciudad del Este sealed their Covenant with Father on the 18th and they sent they a symbol to Father’s tomb on this day that the Schoenstatt Family celebrates Father Kentenich’s birthday with deep gratitude (although in reality we have known for some time that he was born on November 16th).

A Wayside Shrine for the Blessed Mother was blessed in the garden at Father’s birth- place in Gymnich.

Father Angel’s birthday however has not changed, and it was celebrated with a cake with candles and with much joy in House Sonnenau, after the Spanish Mass that he celebrated in the house chapel.

Renewal of the Covenant at Schoenstatt

On the afternoon of the 18th, we gathered as a local family for the Covenant Mass in the Pilgrims’ Church, as is the custom, along with the few visitors who remained here – among them a couple from Chile, a missionary from Mexico, and a priest from Poland. Father Oskar Buchler, Rector of Moriah House, was the main celebrant and Father Heinrich Walter, and a Polish priest who is the chaplain of the Bishop of Koszalin concelebrated. A group of Sisters of Mary provided the music. The Mass of the Prophet was intoned and could easily be applied to our Father and Prophet because it was composed in 1985 for Father’s centennial with texts about the "prophets of God." In his homily, Father Oskar Buehler referred to the apocalyptic times, a reference to the readings of the day, and how these times are characterized by the lack of love. The name of the new Shrine in Crete (LINK to article) offers a response: Heart of Mary! It is the mission that Schoenstatt has in the Covenant of Love: to make the warm love of Mary’s heart present and tangible in every sphere of daily life where love and warmth are lacking. To kindle the fire of love in the midst of the cold that reigns in the world was clearly an explicit message at the time of renewing the Covenant around the Shrine…trembling not only with emotion, but also with the cold!
