PARAGUAY, Cristina and Javier Cabral. Dr. Villalba, or Miguel Antonio, as the families of his Pillars of the Shrine’s course of the Federation of Families know him, was a joyful person. His friends miss him, although they know that he didn’t leave…

He liked to tell clean jokes, especially those in which the protagonist was a doctor, his own profession. When he invited one for dinner, he would personally do the shopping so he could select the best ingredients. Applying his surgical knowledge, he would filet the tilapias, a farm bred fish. During Holy Week, he would also make chipa, a typical meal of corn flour and starch, in a tatcuá or earthen oven. Tatá = fuego (fire)= Agujero (hole): which means the mouth of the earthen oven, which he had built in his house. This was an activity we once shared with him.

I don’t know if Fritz liked these things. Surely, he never had the opportunity to try chipa. I am referring to Fritz Esser, a seminarian of the Marian Sodality during the first years of Schoenstatt, who was called to fight in 1916 during the First World War along with Joseph Engling and others. Fritz became ill with tuberculosis on the battlefront. In those years there was no cure for TB, and he was discharged. He returned and stayed at the Original Shrine as a chaplain. One day he brought some wood in which he had carved the phrase: Servus Mariae nunquam peribit" –A Servant of Mary will Never Perish. Will never die. It was the year 1919. We were always impressed that this phrase was carved and placed in the Shrine by a person who was living his last days. He died in 1923. To us, this was a demonstration of a firm and unbreakable faith.

Your are in our hearts and we remember you with joy

Dr. Miguel Antonio returned to the House of the Father from Santiago de Chile on September 18th. Before traveling to undergo several operations, he wanted to deepen his commitment to being a son of Mary, so he made his perpetual consecration as a member of the Apostolic Family Federation, in the Youth Shrine, that recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary on September 21st.

When his body arrived in Ciudad del Este, it was taken to the Shrine at the Schoenstatt Land. There, beneath the Blessed Mother’s gaze, it seemed as if the luminous frame was more radiant, and the phrase, A Servant of Mary will Never Perish, offered a hopeful response to the sorrow felt by all those present.

Now Miguel Antonio and Fritz are together, perhaps they are exchanging jokes and recipes. Surely he will intercede for us, his course brothers. May we become children of the Father united in the Covenant, who will become pillars for a holy community.

Miguel Antonio, you are in our hearts and we remember you with joy.
