PARAGUAY. Jaier Cabral. In schools during the last century…the phrase, "To the corner!" meant a punishment, in which a student was sent to stand in a corner looking at the wall. There are also other famous corners, such as the wine, Famous Corner, a memory corner, a flowery corner, Rincon, or in English…Corner, is the surname of a Colombian soccer player, and then there’s the expression, the last corner of the world. But here in Terruño, it’s the corners of the Boys’ and Girls’ Youth at Schoenstatt Land.

The corners are the places where the Boys’ and Girls’ Youth have their own space. The girls’ corner is to the left of the Shrine and contains a statue of the Immaculate Conception. The boys’ corner is to the right on the edge of the lake with a Wayside Shrine. For the October 18th celebration they restored and varnished the MTA’s picture frame. There was a lot of activity in both corners throughout the days before the 18th.

It seems that there was a multiplying of the candles miracle

During important celebrations it has been customary to place some candles on the sidewalks. This year, it seems that there was a multiplying of the candles miracle, since there were candles EVERYWHERE, and most of them in the youth corners; they were even hung from the trees. Something new, there were torches at the Father’s Corner and on the road to the Boys’ Youth corner.

Besides the candles, this year many piriritas, or cords with decoratively shaped colored papers, were hung all over the place. These decorations are used at the most popular celebrations.

The corner of the Girls’ Youth was also decorated with huge flags and lilies made of cardboard. The girls wore white blouses.

In the corner of the Boys’ Youth, they had made some rafts with floating candles that they put in the lake. They wore dark clothes and ties.

There was much emotion, enthusiasm, and many songs

After Holy Mass presided over by the Bishop of Ciudad del Este, Rogelio Livieres, and concelebrated by Father Manfredo, the Pastor of the Saint Luke Church, the boys set off many fireworks. They held a presentation for the public. Many things happened on this October 18th. During the morning there was a pilgrimage from the schools to the Shrine with a Mass followed by the children’s Rosary organized by the campaign, One million children praying the rosary. During the afternoon there was a Holy Mass for the pilgrims and at night…there was much emotion, enthusiasm, many songs, many youth, and could it be any other way? For if that day She told us…"I will attract young hearts."
