SOUTH AFRICA, Sarah-Leah Pimentel. 25 August. In Atibaia, Brazil, the Schoenstatt Marian Apostles of Light were celebrating the 80th anniversary of their founding. At the same time, a continent away, in South Africa, the small but vibrant group of Schoenstatt Apostles were gathered at the Shrine in Bedfordview, Johannesburg for a rally day under the theme – "We are Shining Stars".

Clearly the two groups didn’t have any contact with each other, but our dear Mother is working in very powerful ways to educate her children around the world and draw them closer to her. During the rally day, the girls played games that made them realise that even though they come from very different social and economic backgrounds, they could be friends because they have one thing in common – each girl is a star. The opening skit looked at how Palesa, a poor orphan girl had a more precious gift to offer the queen of the country than all the other girls in her class who had parents, toys and clothes of their own, because she gave herself.

All daughters of the Queen

The girls found out that they are all princesses because they are all daughters of the Queen. As princesses, each girl has a crown with precious jewels that shine out for every one to see their royalty, and like the stars in the sky, each girl is called by the Queen to shine brightly in a dark sky. By looking at our little consecration prayer, the girls found out how they could use their eyes, ears, mouth, hearts and themselves to shine brightly for the world. They also discovered that by shining out at home, at school, with their friends, on the playground, they could be adding stars to the Queen’s crown, which the girls made earlier this year to represent their contributions to the Capital of Grace.

In the afternoon, the girls made their own large painted stars and cut out smaller stars so that they can continue with their contributions to the Capital of Grace. Walking hand in hand with our Mother and with hearts filled with joy, we went to the shrine where each girl was invited to meet Jesus before the Blessed Sacrament and through songs and a guided meditation, they spoke with Him, telling him how they could be shining stars for the whole world to see.

I was asked to translate an article from Brazil...

Several days later, I was asked to translate the article describing the 80th anniversary of the Founding of the Schoenstatt Apostles and how the Apostles in Atibaia, Brazil had celebrated the day. As I translated the article, I was struck by the many common themes that the two groups had worked with, even though we didn’t even know how the girls in Brazil were preparing for their Jubilee (and didn’t even know that this was the 80th year since the founding of the Schoenstatt Marian Apostles). It is with great humility that I realise that whether we are participants or leaders in the Schoenstatt family, we never act on our strength, but are wholly instruments for Mother who knows how she wants to educate her children, no matter where they have been scattered. And right now, the Queen wants her little princesses to shine out for the world to see…
