USA, Ann Winzenburg. Fr. Dieter A. Haas celebrated his 40th anniversary of ordination on July 8th at the International Center in Waukesha.

As the Schoenstatt family gathered in his honor, many remembered that Fr. Dieter was one of only three Schoenstatt Fathers ordained in Germany with Fr. Kentenich present. As part of the mass and celebration, Fr. Dieter took the opportunity to share his encounters with the Founder.

The first encounter was a letter that Fr. Kentenich sent him in 1964, when Fr. Dieter was a young man preparing for the priesthood. He had written Fr. Kentenich about his spiritual questions without expecting a response; Fr. Kentenich was under many restrictions as part of his exile in Milwaukee. When a response letter arrived, it was unsigned, but it was addressed with Fr. Kentenich’s characteristic "Carissime!," meaning "dear friend".

Fr. Dieter’s second encounter happened in 1967, when he was a newly-ordained Schoenstatt priest about embark on his first assignment in Argentina. Fr. Kentenich directed a talk to him as a send-off. While the letter he received as a young man addressed the topic of faith, the talk focused on love.

Faith transformed by love

Forty years later, in his homily, Fr. Dieter spoke of these two encounters and the challenge to live faith and love. Then, as a gift for the Schoenstatt family and the 230 members in attendance, Fr. Dieter presented a recently published booklet titled Faith Transformed by Love.

Compiled by Fr. Dieter, the booklet includes a copy of his letter and a transcript of Fr. Kentenich’s sending-off talk. The booklet also highlights selected Psalms, teachings of Fr. Kentenich, and religious art.

Fr. Dieter began his service in Argentina and, then, Texas. Since the late 70s, he has been stationed in Wisconsin, where he served as Superior of the Fathers for 18 years. Currently, he has been working with various branches in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Louisiana, and Puerto Rico.

Fr. Dieter is currently in Germany, visiting his two course brothers. He returns to Waukesha August 18th.
