Home Shrine, Believing in the Presence of Mary in the Midst of Our Home

Do we have to own our own home to have a Home Shrine? A dialog via email awakened by a reflection from Father Nicolás

PARAGUAY, Javier Cabral/mkf. "First of all, many have an image of the Blessed Mother. It is what we call a Schoenstatt Corner. After the Covenant of Love, little by little, they conquer and build their Home Shrine. Some are in a hurry. They feel the urgent need for the Blessed Mother in their home; others take more time. Each authentic Schoenstatt family will sooner or later see that they can no longer go forward without having the Blessed Mother at the center of their home….." This was experienced in the biweekly mail-out of the reflections from Father Nicolás Schwizer, # 14, The Home Shrine. It is a text which awakened an interesting dialog via email and is worth sharing with the entire Schoenstatt.de community.

Good morning…..

I read an article from the REFLECTIONS by Father Nicolás Schwizer. It was # 14 on July 1, 2007. I thought it was interesting, but my husband and I have a question. For a long time now, we have been asking Blessed Mother to glorify Herself and to establish Herself in our home. We still do not have our Home Shrine because we have been told that we have to have our own home, and that if this is not the case, we cannot have a Home Shrine. My question is that if we already have Her as the Queen of our home and she has established Herself with us, although we do not own our own home, could She not be with us physically in our home with a Home Shrine? This is what has kept us from having a Home Shrine because we have been doing everything that Father Nicolás says. But, we do not have our own home. Please help us with this concern. Is it necessary to have our own home to have a Home Shrine? X

The home is formed with experiences

Good afternoon:

My name is Javier Cabral and I coordinate the mail-out of the reflections. I am just now answering because we just arrived from our vacation in Salta and Jujuy.

The first thing I will tell you is that it is not necessary to have your own home. Furthermore, the first Home Shrine in Paraguay was of the Santiviago family in Ciudad del Este. It was blessed in a rented home. They later moved to Asunción. In that case, they simply move the symbols and the furniture they might have had.

Truthfully, I know of many cases of persons who have moved several times to different cities for reasons of employment and they take their symbols with them. For example, the leaders of our group when we began in Schoenstatt, they moved to another city and took their symbols with them. I also met an Argentinean couple who lived in Paraguay and since they knew that some day they would go back to Argentina, they made their Home Shrine within a piece of furniture which was similar to a tabernacle. It was moveable. There is another couple from Argentina who lived for many years in Paraguay. When they moved to Miami, they took their Home Shrine with them. They have now returned to Paraguay and once again they brought their Home Shrine with them. What’s more, the daughter Shrine (the bricks, bell and all) from the city of Madison, Wisconsin in the USA, was moved to another location. With powerful tow trucks it was lifted onto a truck and moved for several blocks. On page 73 of the book "The Home Shrine" (Editorial Patris Argentina) by Father Guillermo Carmona, reads: "Sometimes the chosen place can be temporary until there are more ideal conditions for its definite location."

Finally, the Original Shrine in Schoenstatt, Germany is built on land belonging to the Pallottine Congregation. Rather, it does not belong to the Schoenstatt Movement. Otherwise stated, the Original Shrine in Germany is not built on its "own land."

When you move to a new house, whether you own it or not, the Schoenstatt Corner can be blessed anew along with the house.

I do not want to enter into a controversy with the people who said what they did about owning the home, but the "home" does not take shape automatically with a property deed but rather is formed from experiences.

Perhaps the example of Mary and Joseph who had no shelter and had the Child in a manger may help you. The most important person in history did not wait for His own home or a place of luxury. I hope what I am writing will help you. What is important is that you are experiencing it and the sooner you bless it, the better.

Anyway, I am going to search for some other texts (after I unpack) and I will send you what I find. I am also going to see if I can find someone who moved their Home Shrine so they can tell you about it.

Greetings,

Javier Cabral (Family Federation)

Schoenstatt is love, let’s not complicate it

Dear Javier,

It has been a pleasure for my husband and I to listen to or read this email. We now have to conquer all of the symbols for our Home Shrine. This did not only concern me and my husband, but all of our brothers and sisters in the group who have sealed the Covenant of Love. I hope that your advice also helps them. I even had a problem with my husband because he said it had to be in our own home and I would tell him that what was important was that She dwell in my heart and in my home whether we owned the home or not.

Thank you for your suggestion.

May God and our Blessed Mother bless you and your family,

X

Upon receiving the email, I was somewhat surprised, but later I took time to respond since it concerned me that with so many demands and norms that the life would not fade. There is a song which says: "Schoenstatt is love…..let’s not complicate it….."

While speaking to my wife on the topic, she made me see that we ourselves do not live in our own home. We live in a house belonging to the company, and in our city, half of the Schoenstatters live in houses belonging to the company ITAIPU…..

Javier

"Home Shrine, to believe in the presence of Mary in the midst of our home, to firmly trust in the power of the Mother and Educator and to give ourselves to Her with a childlike heart."
