BRAZIL, Tania Chiogna and Marilisa Colussi. Hundreds of people gathered on Thursday June the 7th at six in the morning and prepared flower carpets with religious themes, around the square of the Cathedral of Saint Angelo in Rio Grande do Sul for the traditional celebration of Corpus Christi, the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Mary, flowers, angels, Christ, stained glass windows, and chalices were some of the images that were symbolized in designs utilizing different materials: sawdust, wood chips, Peruvian bark dyed with vibrant colors complemented with flower petals, seeds, and colored sand that presented a beautiful spectacle for the faithful who arrived to praise Jesus in the procession and during the celebration of Holy Mass. The flower carpets were made by members of the Schoenstatt and Emmaus Movements. The images were chosen in accord with the motto of the 5th Celam Conference: Disciples and missionaries of Christ in Him our people have life. A team prepared the materials and dyed the materials a week in advance. Holy Mass was celebrated in front of the Cathedral and then Bishop Clemente Weber and several priests led the procession past the flower carpets. Hundreds of people participated proving once again that faith still reigns among men. Translation: Celina Garza, Harlingen, TX, USA /amj |
