The manger lies before my eyes

Blessed Christmas 2006

Tired, worn-out and with a smile that illumined the home, the father comes home, lightly closes the door, while the kids play and run to his arms that like the firm branches of the oak wait for the meeting. The mother is laying the desk; over the shoulder she sees him coming and their eyes meet, they understand and share. A clamor of hugs and laughs speak about respect and dignity, about bread and work, about simplicity and humility.

Dear ties and dreamed sleep materialize concerning the table. It was the night of December 24. Only the children were eating, dad and mom, holding hands, could not stop contemplating them. The youngest of the four children brought his plate to his parents. The father caressed him and told him to go on eating. A tear was rolling down the cheek of the mother, with a sublime dizziness that was reflecting a real sensibility. –Why do you cry, mom? - the elder son asked her. - Simply because the manger lies before my eyes - she answered calmly.

Believing in the one who was born

This night that family it did not understand very much of Christmas trees, Santa Claus, gifts, banquets and champagne. But they discovered their CHRISTMAS and the big mystery of this holiday.

They knew how to look at each other, warming their home with their mere presence. This night they hoped in the dusk of the night of december 24 that something would happen, which would allow them to keep on fighting to make their lives a journey worth loving. What they were expecting that night was no big deal: just themselves sharing the bread, making each other grow in every moment. They were a manger, there were a life, they were CHRISTMAS. There they were, believing in the one who was born. Putting their lives in the hands of God, father, friend and partner.

CHRISTMAS is to walk along the water without sinking, giving all in the commitment for other, be dazzled by the nobility of a hug, breaking into laughter, allowing to roll the tears before the human and divine of the Manger. CHRISTMAS is to feel in the sublime of the soul that there is someone more in our midst, being consolidated in the indescribable warmth of love. CHRISTMAS is the fortitude of getting up every day and living with the steadfastness being ready to die for what we dream and fight for.

That's why in CHRISTMAS the displeasures, the injustices, the despair, the despondency, the sufferings, the anxiety, the powerlessness no longer is dominating us, so that in a scream of courage and fearlessness we change them into a disinterested love that changes the reality that we live. A reality of truths, dignity and utopias for all.

Let's change ourselves to be able to change something.

Let's live through CHRISTMAS with the immensity of the mountains and the simple-mindedness of the flat field. Immensity to understand the immense thing of this child born for us in this night and simplicity in the heart reach out to our own longing and to the one next to us. Let's change to be able to change something; let us commit ourselves so that the others commit themselves with us, let us live so that others could live. Let's discover CHRISTMAS in the simple-mindedness of the family, in the extraordinary of the friendship and in this companion of our journey who will come that 24 at 12 a.m.
