SOUTH AFRICA, Sr. M. Joanne. Living the Covenant: Africa’s guiding star of love – this is the motto that leads the Schoenstatt Family of Gauteng, South Africa, in the year 2007. The motto, that has created much joy, was "born" during the traditional October celebrations at the end of the month of the Covenant of Love.

The annual October celebrations of the Schoenstatt Family in Gauteng started with a Covenant Mass on Wednesday evening 18 October in the Aurum Patris (Gold of the Father) Shrine at Bedfordview, Johannesburg. Fr David Musgrave, a Schoenstatt Father, flew up from Cape Town to celebrate with them. Since this is the day on which the Shrine was consecrated, in 1975, it is always a double celebration.

They continued on Saturday 21st Oct. with Mass at 8.00am and then the various Branches as well as a speaker from the Pilgrim Mother apostolate (expression used in South Africa for the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign of the Pilgrim Mother),  reported on their highlights of the year. This was followed by a talk on the Pope’s encyclical Deus caritas est. Afterwards, everyone workshopped what they had heard during the morning, considering what God was saying to us Schoenstatt in the province of Gauteng. Lunch was a family affair with everyone bringing something towards it. Since it is summer in South Africa, all enjoyed their lunch outside in the spacious garden around the Shrine.

Engling fire in a traditional African cooking pot

In the afternoon they brought their deliberations before the Eucharistic Lord in an hour of adoration. They then burnt the contributions to the capital of grace in the Josef Engling fire outside the Shrine. The slips are burnt in a traditional African cooking pot which stands on three legs. The cooking pot is round, thus reminding us of the global Josef Engling fire. Thus well prepared through discussions, prayer and grace from the Shrine, the participants returned to the hall to discuss the motto for 2007. This did not take too long and all participants enthusiastically clapped the final formulation into emergence: Living the Covenant: Africa’s guiding star of love.

Sent out to live the covenant and be guiding stars of love for the African continent.

Sunday 22nd began at 10.00am with an hour’s devotion in the Shrine. The rest of the morning was filled with a presentation on how all are called to be guiding stars, following the guidelines given in the Founding Document of Schoenstatt.  The youth began the presentation with a skit as three kings looking for the right star among all the stars in our modern skies. There was a short reflection on the first stars which emerged on the Schoenstatt horizon, namely the sodalists as the founding generation. Then members from various Branches and age groups shared how they spread the news about Schoenstatt and what our M.T.A. has worked from the Shrine, home shrines and as Pilgrim Mother.

The day ended with holy Mass and a procession to the Shrine led by many home Shrines and Pilgrim Mothers. One of the younger Pilgrim Mother members made his covenant of love on this day. All were blessed and sent out from the Shrine to live the covenant and be guiding stars of love for the African continent.
