SCHOENSTATT/ROME, Father Oskar Buhler. Pope Benedict XVI has named Monsignor Professor Ignacio Sanna, a member of the Schoenstatt Institute of Diocesan Priests, Archbishop of Oristano, Sardinia. Monsignor Sanna is a native of Sardinia and he returned to his country after decades of activity in Rome. He learned about Schoenstatt at the beginning of the 1970’s and he joined the Institute of Diocesan Priests in 1974. Many Schoenstatters who went on pilgrimage to Rome met him in the Father Kentenich Center of Via Icilio 20 as the custodian of the provisional Shrine of Rome, and he was an effective promoter of the Matri Ecclesiae Shrine in Belmonte. On June 25th he will be consecrated as bishop in his cathedral. Monsignor Ignacio Sanna was born in 1942 in Orune, Sardinia. He studied philosophy and theology in the Roman Major Seminary. He was ordained as priest at his parish in 1967. After some special professional formation in the Ecclesiastic Academy in Rome, and a brief period in the diplomatic service of the Vatican, he returned to theological studies. His specialty is anthropological theology. In 1990, after carrying out several teaching assignments, he was named ordinary professor of the Pontifical University of Lateran. He had special scientific interest in the renowned German theologian, Karl Rahner, to the point that at the present time Monsignor Ignacio Sanna is the most knowledgeable person in Italy regarding Karl Rahner. He has published a considerable number of scientific writings and has released a thirty-third book just a few weeks ago. The list of his essays and articles include two hundred and thirteen titles. Since 1998, Monsignor Professor Sanna has been Vice Rector of the Pontifical University of Letran, an assignment he received because of the broad expansion of its university in many countries. His scientific knowledge has been highly recognized as a result of his appointments to the Pontifical Academy of Theology (2000), and to the International Theological Commission (2004). Along with his intensive scientific activity, Monsignor Sanna has made time for pastoral activities. He served as spiritual director for the youth of Catholic Action and he was an ecclesiastic assistant on the national level for a branch of the Italian Catholic Action. Rector of the Matri Ecclesiae ShrineFrom 1980 until 2004 Monsignor Sanna dedicated himself with very special love to the care of the provisional Shrine of Rome in Via Icilio and to the Schoenstatt Family. Many Schoenstatters met him when they visited the Father Kentenich Center. Thanks to him, many pilgrims of the Schoenstatt family visiting Rome obtained tickets for papal audiences. The beginnings of the Schoenstatt Family in Rome emerged during those years. Through his contacts with so many different places and personalities, he was able to favorably promote the cause of the Matri Ecclesiae Shrine. He has been rector of this shrine since it was inaugurated on September 8, 2004. The fact that the Shrine continues to develop and much life is evident can be attributed to Monsignor Sanna’s openness. When Monsignor Ignacio Sanna takes charge as Archbishop with a completely new assignment in the life of the Church, then surely it will be said that the Madonna of "his" Matri Ecclesiae Shrine will continue to bless him and accompany him in his pastoral tasks. And he can be assured that the Schoenstatt Family will pray for him very much. Greetings and congratulations at the guestbook of Msgr.
