NIGERIA, Fr. Johnson Nellissery. "Pure stars of the Shrine", "United troops of Our Lady": these are the names of the two groups of the Schoenstatt Youth that add young Schoenstatt life to the small Schoenstatt family growing around the Shrine in Ibadan, Nigeria. About one year after the blessing of the Shrine, the experiences from the first Daughter Shrine, in Uruguay, are mirrored in Nigeria: the Blessed Mother seems to attract people once she has her Shrine in their midst.

The covenant day celebration of the month of September was prepared and conducted by the Schoenstatt Youth. The celebration started with the adoration at 3pm, which ended with the Eucharistic Blessing at 6pm. The Solemn Rosary procession followed immediately. Representing the Girls’ Youth, Benedicta spoke about their life as "Pure Stars of the Shrine". Augustine represented the Boys’ Youth and narrated how the Schoenstatt Youth came to exist in Nigeria and how the boys live as "United Troops of Our Lady".

Legion of Mary Spends a Day in the Shrine

More than 100 Legionaries from Ibadan came to the Shrine for a day of recollection and prayer on 1st of October. Their programme included Rosary, classes, Adoration, Confession and Eucharist.

For the first time, Fr. Heinrich Walter, the General Superior of the Schoenstatt Fathers’ is visiting the community in an African country – Nigeria. He is accompanied by Fr. Mariano Irureta, the Provincial of the Chilean community of Schoenstatt Fathers and also one of the Nigerian Councillors.

The five Theologians who recently completed their studies and now await the first Tertianship learn German. Fr. Odenwald, a member of the Federation of Schoenstatt Priests from Germany, gives the classes to them in Villa Maria, the Noviciate house in Ibadan.

After the Novices had found their course ideal, they left for the six-month practicum in different towns in Nigeria and also in Benin Republic. During this period, they will work as helping hands in different hospitals and in the homes for the disabled.
