USA, Cathy Johnson/mkf. When the group left Slidell, it was only with great difficulty and prayers, because the roads were completely flooded. No, this is not from a news report on the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, but taken from a report on a Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign meeting, in June 2005, few weeks before the hurricane flattened Slidell. There are some 350 coordinators of the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign New Orleans, Slidell, Kenner, Metaire … and all these towns affected by the hurricane. As hurricane Rita threatens the Houston and Corpus Christi area and hurricane Katrina’s victims struggle to find a new beginning, Cathy Johnson, state coordinator of the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign in Louisiana, thanks for all the prayers from the Schoenstatt family that comforted so much.

Cathy Johnson herself was at a Schoenstatt retreat in Madison when Katrina struck. She has been in touch with several district coordinators and they are untouched by the flood waters or the severe winds that hit Louisiana and Mississippi. All District Coordinators have opened their homes and hearts to those who have no place to go.  One coordinator has been volunteering at a shelter and as been brought to tears by the misery and losses of the people there.

Some semblence of order has been restored in the city and work is progressing ahead of schedule, she shares. "As for myself, I understand that I had 5.5 ft of water.  Since my house is raised, the flooding is lessened, but I know that my car and everything on the floor is ruined.  However, I know that God is in control.  I think of Fr. Kentenich's belief that God speaks to us in the events around us and I am putting myself at his disposal to find out what he wants me to learn from this.

I have had calls from my Schoenstatt family all over the USA offering me a place to stay.  One person, Brigette Allen, even offered to pay for my plane fare to get there!  Our mother has certainly surrounded me with loving and generous people."

The MTA surrounded by the rosary

Cathy Johnson lost her pc, her car, much of her belongings, but feels especially sorry for the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign’s state banner and the Pilgrim MTA’s lost.  "It is a BEAUTIFUL banner. The center of the banner had an oil painting of our MTA and she was surrounded by the rosary. Unfortunately, I'm told I had about 4' of water in my home and the banner was on the floor of one of my closets.   I am heartbroken over the loss of all my pilgrim MTAs, the material both Spanish and English, that was in my garage, the many books I just purchased from Sr. Jessica in June, the photos I've taken over the years at Masses, meetings, etc.  I do believe my home shrine remained intact. Communications is also a problem.  The post offices are not delivering mail, phone service not yet restored, and electricity slowly coming back.  For those of us whose wires were under water, there will be no electricity for us and rewiring may be necessary. Please continue keeping us in your prayers…"

The MTA, surrounded by the rosary, is with all those who suffer… The Third International Auxiliary, that presided September 3’s Illuminated Rosary in Schoenstatt, "knows" the disaster area that was prayed for: June 28 through August 10, 1993, she visited New Orleans, and the Lousiana Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign family.

More prayers needed

This morning, Wednesday the 21st, the information on the Hurricane Rita does not look good.  I am especially concerned for our Sisters, our Shrine and our center.  They are right on the bayside and since it is projected that it will enter land between Corpus Christi, Texas and Houston, Texas that means that they would be badly hit.....so, many prayers are needed.  Although we are approximately 150 miles further South,  we too might have to evacuate if it comes in below Corpus Christi. Why put ourselves at risk, material things can be replaced, life cannot. There is a mandatory evacuation of the city of Corpus Christi. Our Sisters in Lamar also have to evacuate. I just spoke with one of the Sisters and they are making their preparations. MPHCEV!!!!! We trust that Our Mother will not let anything happen to our Confidentia Shrine.

"Now it is hitting us!", writes Angie Santos, from Houston. "Seems that the hurricane turns towards Houston, and we have to evacuate. We entrust us to the prayers of our Schoenstatt brothers and sidsters, may the effects not be too desastrous, may God protect the people of this city that has been so generous with the evacuees from New Orleans."

"Protect us with your mantle... in storms you remain in view... we shall never fail with you."
