WYD – SCHOENSTATT, mkf. "Buon giorno!" says Bishop Dr. Peter Wolf during Holy Mass being celebrated in the Original Shrine on the morning of the 22nd of August. The numerous Italian youths present responded with an enthusiastic ovation. As it happened previous to WYD, numerous groups from Italian dioceses stop anew in Schoenstatt on their return trip home. Youths from Australia have also arrived – the country for the next WYD – and the Spanish community "Home of the Mother" celebrate in Schoenstatt, along with their founder, the closing of WYD with a consecration to Jesus and Mary. Cardinal Enno Antonelli of Florence cordially greeted on the morning of the 23rd of August the more than 600 pilgrims from the Neocatechumate Way from Tuscany who also made a stop in Schoenstatt on their return trip home.

Once again there are Italian buses in the parking lot. Once again you see large numbers of youths with pilgrims’ backpacks, singing, and clapping their hands as they walk through Schoenstatt. Around 11 AM on the morning of the 23rd of August, more than 600 youths from the Diocese of Florence who participated in WYD with the Neocatechumenate, arrived in Schoenstatt. As did Schoenstatt and other Movements, the Neocatechumenate had a great encounter with many of their members during WYD in Cologne. Before traveling to Cologne, some Spanish groups from that Movement were in Schoenstatt. On their return trip, youths from Tuscany, Italy met in Schoenstatt with Cardinal Antonelli and the pastors who accompanied them. They were able to meditate on their experiences and share testimonies. "Welcome to Schoenstatt!" said the Cardinal after singing along with the boys a very moving song which was enthusiastically accompanied by guitars and drums. "In German, Schoenstatt means ‘beautiful place’ and it certainly is," said the Cardinal amid the applause of the youths. Just as they arrived, the Sun appeared. The Cardinal gave a brief introduction to the Schoenstatt Movement. After the introduction of the parish groups, the youths took turns sharing their WYD experiences.

The famous blue Italian hats

On the Sunday afternoon of August 21st, quite early, almost 500 Italian youths mainly from the diocese of Porta Santa Rufina arrived. Contrary to the majority, they had quickly left Mary’s Camp and had brought with them the Italian flavor of WYD to Schoenstatt. Even when almost all of the blue hats from Italy had exchanged owners and were now on the heads of the Chileans, Germans, or Mexicans, the symbol of "Italy" is always connected with the blue hats and this is perpetuated in many photos. It is now evident in Schoenstatt, thanks to these hats, that the Italians are here. They went to the Marian School to stay overnight and in the afternoon they heard a little on Schoenstatt. As a closing to the WYD in Germany, they left early on the morning of the 22nd for Dachau, the place they connect with Father Kentenich as a witness of faith during the Third Reich. On Mt. Moriah, more than 100 Italian youths who had previously stopped by on their way to Cologne, stopped in for another visit.

Less fortunate on their departure from Mary’s Camp were about 430 Italian youths: they arrived at 2 AM to the Mt. Schoenstatt parking lot. Nevertheless, they were overjoyed to find a busload of pilgrims from the country which will host the next WYD, Australia! On Monday they took a tour of Koblenz and the River Mosel. On Tuesday morning, Fr. Ludovico Tadeschi (a Schoenstatt Father from Argentina working in Rome) gave them an introduction to Schoenstatt. He did not talk on the history or the structure of Schoenstatt; instead, in a lively way, he gave them the message of the three Schoenstatt graces from the Shrine as a means to guide us with strong experiences, to help us make decisions and to help us through difficulties. This was done as a meditation and a concrete application of the WYD experiences a la Schoenstatt.

Consecration to Mary in the Shrine

The "Home of the Mother" community from Madrid arrived in Schoenstatt on the afternoon of August 21st. It is made up of Brothers and Sisters, who because of their original habits, attracted many photographic cameras during WYD. This community also has a youth branch: youths from different countries were with them during WYD. On the morning of the 22nd of August, with their founder, they celebrated Holy Mass in the Original Shrine. One of the Sisters translated the homily with great detail for some girls from the USA. In the Original Shrine, in "this marvelous place of Mary’s graces, the Mother of God" as the founder stated, one of the Northamerican girls made her consecration to Mary while a boy from Brazil made his "consecration to the cross" on which he placed himself and his whole life under the protection of Mary who leads him totally to Jesus…..

Young pilgrims arrive continuously in Schoenstatt – like the ones from a parish in Colonia Tovar, Venezuela – who heard something about Schoenstatt "in relation to WYD" and now they want to know this place of grace. "I will draw youthful hearts here….." The Covenant of Love for the youth of the World is a reality!

Listen to the words of welcome by Cardinal Enno Antonelli (in Italian)
