CHILE,Adriana Narvaez. There was no Eucharistic celebration on the 18th of May in the Shrine of Ayinrehu. Why? On this day all the Schoenstatt Family congregated in the cathedral to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Episcopal ordination of our brother in the Covenant, Monsignor Manuel Camilo Vial. On the 31st of May they celebrated Monsignor Manuel Camilo’s birthday as a family with a Eucharist that was very well attended.

It was a triple celebration since on this day they also remembered the 80th Anniversary of the Diocese of Saint Joseph of which he is the Shepherd. It was a marvelous Eucharist, it seemed as if it had taken place at the Vatican, when a great number of bishops entered in procession. All of them wanted to celebrate with their brother, who two days later would celebrate his 70th year of a blessed life. The Apostolic Nuncio, Monsignor Aldo Cavalli, who is very close to the Schoenstatt Family, was present, and twelve bishops along with all the priests and deacons of the diocese concelebrated. Several pastors from other Christian churches, civil and military authorities, and hundreds of persons from the parish communities also attended. A letter of greeting and blessing from Pope Benedict XVI was read at the beginning of the celebration, filling everyone with emotion, it almost felt as if he were present when his affectionate and familiar words were heard.

The Eucharist proceeded full of joy and gratitude and with a solemnity that was enhanced by a magnificent choir. The Schoenstatters occupied all of the section of the first floor, and Boys’ and Girls’ Youth completely filled the hall that surrounds the upper part of the cathedral, they accompanied the choir with great enthusiasm. The homily was given by the Bishop Emeritus of the diocese, Monsignor Sergio Contreras, who recalled the history of the Diocese and he praised the pastoral work and the Christian path of Monsignor Manuel Camilo Vial.

"Bishop of our Family"

On the 31st of May Monsignor Manuel Camilo’s birthday was celebrated as a family with a very well attended Eucharist. After burning the symbols of the contributions to the Capital of Grace, a cake was shared with the joy of having a Bishop of the Schoenstatt Family, a Bishop with such a rich life, who since his youth when he was studying in a school of the French Priests in Santiago, united himself to Schoenstatt. There he had two companions who later became life long friends, Father Hernan Allessandri and Father Joaquin Allende, and with them he entered the Movement. In 1952, after studying one year in the School of Law in the University of Chile, he entered the novitiate of the Pallotine Fathers. On the 16th of July 1961, he was ordained as a priest in Friburg by Monsignor Manuel Larrain. When he returned to Chile he became Vicar of the Parish of Carrascal and later of Chimbarongo. When the Church separated Schoenstatt from the Pallotine Fathers, he entered the Institute of Schoenstatt Fathers at the moment of its founding, in 1965. Then he was in Temuco designated as Pastor in the Parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where he worked during the years of 1967 and 1972. During this period, in 1968, he participated in the blessing of the Shrine of Ayinrehue.

Good Shepherd, Father of the Poor

Pope John Paul II named him Bishop on the 25th of March 1980 and his Episcopal Consecration was celebrated in Santiago on the 18th of May. His motto is: "Good Shepherd, Father of the Poor". Since the 4th of November of 2001 he has fulfilled his duty as Bishop of this Diocese, sharing these tasks with his work as General Secretary of the Episcopal Conference and as a member of the Episcopal Council of Latin America. In the Diocese of Saint Joseph of Temuco he has especially distinguished himself as his motto denotes, for his preoccupation for the poor, for the youth and for the Mapuches, who honored him with the title of "Lonko", and also for his ecumenical attitude. At the present time, after being a great motivator of the canonization of the first saint from Chile, Saint Teresa of the Andes, he presides over the National Commission for the canonization of Father Hurtado and as such he heads the delegation from Chile to Rome next October 23rd.

"We are grateful to the Blessed Mother for the gift that he signifies for the Cenacle Shrine Heart of the Father and for the Family of Ayinrehue who is happy to be under the care of a Shepherd who has been blessed abundantly by the Lord and who struggles to present the Church with the Schoenstatt ideals to convert it into soul of the world".
