HUNGARY, Beth Rockers from USA. I was blessed to have the opportunity to participate for the first time in my life in the dedication of a Schoenstatt Shrine: in Obudavar, Hungary. The international atmosphere, and the beautiful weather played a big role in festivity. Now here are some details…

On April 1-3, I traveled to the dedication of the first Schoenstatt Shrine in Hungary. After spending the entire day on the train, I arrived in Vienna, Austria around 9:30pm. The night was all too short for me, as we left the retreat center in Vienna early Saturday morning. We met up with some Austrian pilgrims that were also going with us to the dedication.

From there, we headed on our way to Obudavar. On the bus ride, we got to know each other, sang, and prayed for the success of the dedication. We stopped just over the border to check in our passports. Then, when we arrived in Veszprem, we couldn’t find the restaurant where our lunch was awaiting us. We finally arrived, and sat down to a delicious three course meal. As I ate, I enjoyed listening to the Austrian dialect, not understanding much of the conversation going on around me.

Friends and family from all over the world

The next stop was Obudavar, now only 20-30 minutes away. Going up the mountain reminded me so much of my home on Berg Schoenstatt. The ever winding road upwards! As we got to the flat land, I marveled at the simple but beautiful countryside. The farmers in the fields, and the mountains in the background; I was in heaven. Soon we arrived in Obudavar. People clapped and waved as our two busses stopped. Some were welcomed by their friends, and others, like me, were introduced to new people.

Although I don`t know the correct number of people present, I believe there was about two thousand people from the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Poland, Chile, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, and perhaps elsewhere.

Archbishop Dr. Marfi Gyula officiated at the dedication, along with Bishop Laszlo Biro concelebrating, and many priests including Fr. Franz Brügger, Fr. Tilmann Beller, and Fr. Lothar Penners. Sister Marie-Gudrun was also present as the province superior of Hungary.

Few hours after the dedication, John Paul II died

Fr. Johannes Kristof was born in Hungary, but worked with the Schoenstatt movement in Austria. He prayed for a shrine, and the Schoenstatt family of Vienna was able to build one shortly after he died in an accident. The Hungarian Schoenstatt family felt close to Fr. Kristof and passed out a novena to him, for all who made a visit to the shrine.

That night while we were on the bus, we heard of the death of Pope John Paul II. Our beloved Father died six hours after the dedication Mass began. I couldn`t help but think of all the graces from the shrine. I was content to know he was looking down at us from heaven.

The Hungarian Schoenstatt family are blessed to have a shrine they can call their own.. It is something truly wonderful. The overall experience was one I will never forget. I hope everyone can take part in a dedication of a shrine sometime in their life. I am sure the blessings from the dedication are still flowing from our Blessed Mother`s newest home.
