HUNGARY, Rita and Robert Godany. "Each morning when we awake we think: did we dream it or is it true? said the Csermak couple when they were in Schoenstatt participating in an encounter of the European Families of the Schoenstatt Movement. "We had dreamed about it for a long time, we have visited it spiritually...and still it like a dream". And now it has become a reality: the first Schoenstatt Shrine in Hungary was blessed on the 2nd of April 2005, in the presence of at least one thousand five hundred persons.

At the beginning of March 1983, Father Tilmann Beller visited a group of three families in Veszprem, a Hungarian city. In 1985 he presented the first Journey for families that lasted one week: five families participated. In 1986 a picture of the MTA for the altar was obtained. Year after year the number of families interested in Schoenstatt grew. In 1995 the candidature for the first course of Federation Families began. The eldest couple of this first course of Federation, expressed the desire to celebrate their golden anniversary - on 04-30-05 - in a Schoenstatt Shrine in Hungary. The Blessed Mother did not want to deny them the fulfillment of this desire.

Schoenstatt, "a beautiful place".

Some years ago some beautiful land of more than 50.000m2 was bought, it is situated in the outskirts of the urban zone of Obudavar. The date of the anniversary was approaching...In October 2000, the directors of the Schoenstatt Family of Hungary decided that the Shrine should be ready by March 2005. A year later a sort of "popular assembly" was convened that confirmed this decision. It was also decided that no more donations from outside Hungary would be accepted for the construction of the Shrine.

It was foreseen that the Shrine would be built on this extensive land outside the urban radius that was used for agriculture. As time passed, several difficulties arose with the land or rather with the permits for construction on this place, they decided to abandon this place and to move towards the

surroundings of the city, where in a higher zone, there were eight lots three of which, all together were4,000 m2, belonged to the Schoenstatt Movement. Hoping to buy the other lots later on, they asked for the permit for construction for the lot which was furtherest from the street.

A Shrine is born...

To the great joy of the Schoenstatt Family, Monsignor Dr. Marfi Gyula, Archbishop of Obudavar, authorized the construction of the Shrine in his Archdiocese on the 18th of October 2002.

Like a beautiful Christmas present, the authorization from the city for the construction arrived on the 24th of December 2003. A month later the Movement was able to buy the closest lot, that was more than 2.000m2 surface area. A new round of transactions began...

The experts had made a grid with the estimated costs, so that each person could pledge to finance each part. The Hungarian families with the Boys' and Girls' Youth paid for most of the construction. They asked the friends from outside Hungary if they could use their donations for the training center not the Shrine. They generously accepted.

On July 3, 2004, the cornerstone was installed. Construction began immediately at an accelerated pace, as well as the interior decoration and the preparation for the inaugural. The long winter worried those responsible for the work very much. They worked until the last minute so that on the afternoon of the 2nd of April of 2005 they could participate in the blessing of the first daughter Shrine in Hungary along with a thousand five hundred persons.

A great family is celebrating...and they invited their friends.

Most of those attending, the majority Schoenstatters, did not want to be "considered" guests, but family. They came from the Czech Republic, Germany, Switerzland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, and Slovakia. Father Pedro Kuhlcke, a young Schoenstatt Father from Argentina, was the symbol of the bond with other continents. Beth Rockers of the United States, represented the Girls' Youth from her country. The interest of the priests caused a great joy: more than forty concelebrated the Holy Mass with Monsignor Marfi (Archbishop), the Auxiliary Bishop Monsignor Biro, Father Brugger (Provincial Superior) and Father Beller.

Some who were not Schoenstatters were also invited, especially from Obudavar and its surroundings. A Hungarian couple from Austria wrote some days after the blessing:

We are grateful for the invitation for the blessing of the Schoenstatt Shrine. We were profoundly impressed by the good organization of this encounter, the number of people that participated, and above all the atmosphere that reigned in Obudavar. We don't remember seeing so many young families with their children, that were surrounded in such a way with love and tranquility; it was different to what we are accustomed in common events with massive attendance.

We were deeply impressed by the most beautiful experience of belonging of the community, to see how they mutually exchanged courtesies. We are grateful to have been with you! Surely it will not be the last time that we will see the Shrine, surely we will pray there again.

The Hungarian Schoenstatt Family prepared itself for the "celebration of faithfulness" on the occasion the aforementioned golden anniversary that would be celebrated on the 04-30-05. The life of the Shrine has begun! The weekly Catholic newspaper "New Man" titled an article about the Shrine:

"The union of divine grace and human aspiration". We can hope for the fulfillment of this union, that in the shadow of this Shrine the Church and the society in Hungary may receive effective impulses for renewal in Christ.
