NIGERIA, Fr. Johnson Nellissery. Greetings were received from all over the world and streams of prayer were offered, which guaranteed an outpouring of grace, for the two-day youth camp in Nigeria held between 19th and 20th February. The theme was ‘light of the nation’. This event was the first of its kind in the history of the movement in Nigeria. More than 40 youths from different parishes in the Archdiocese attended and many of the Schoenstatt Fathers’ students assisted in organising them. There were many activities on the camp including information about Schoenstatt and the Schoenstatt Youth Movement. Their aim was successful because many youths have shown an interest in the Covenant of Love and now wish to join the Schoenstatt Youth.

History was made in Schoenstatt, Nigeria when six boys and seven girls from a parish made their Covenant of Love with the Blessed Mother on 20th February. The final ceremony of the youth camp began with the Mass and the Covenant of Love was solemnly made in the Shrine. The brothers and some of the youths’ parents were present to see the event, in which Fr Johnson Nellissery accepted and witnessed their covenant and the signing of the Covenant Book. The day ended much later in the evening after a party celebration.

Nigerian Schoenstatt Youth is born

The thirteen boys and girls from Nigeria who sealed their Covenant of Love on 20th of February are now preparing themselves to work intensively towards the founding of the first youth groups. They are proud of being the pioneers and are ready to take up the mission entrusted to them for their nation.

The lack of sufficient funds did not stop the youth camp from taking place, nor did it discourage the promoters and in the end, through the generous financial and spiritual support of many friends in Nigeria, all their problems were solved. They started with a little donation of N 200 (about one euro) given by one of the students and later they received enough money to fund the camp. Thanks to our benefactors and to M.T.A.

First 18th celebration in the Lent

The first 18th celebration in this year’s Lenten season took place in the Victory-Shrine in Ijokodo and was prepared and conducted by the novices. Over 120 people were present for the celebration, which began at 3 pm with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Shrine. P. Roman Haronska gave a short message and at 6 pm the Stations of the Cross were said around the Shrine.

The presence of the MTA in her Shrine is gradually being noticed and the number of participants at the liturgical celebrations and Holy Mass has increased tremendously. There are now about 50 people attending the Sunday Masses and many are travelling from outside the area to join in the celebration. This has resulted in the Fathers having to buy a sound system and a few chairs.

The next big event is already scheduled: March 6, 2005, the novices will then receive the Sion tunic.
