USA, Margaret Steinhage Fenelon. "Thanks be to God," said Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan to the 1100 Catholic laity and religious and 21 clergy – including Schoenstatt Fathers and priests, deacons, and seminarians from throughout the archdiocese - gathered on October 10 at the International Schoenstatt Center in Waukesha for the official Opening of the Eucharistic Year for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. "I’d like to say a real word of gratitude to our Schoenstatt Family. What a blessing they are to the Archdiocese. And here we are, right next to the Shrine. Fr. Kentenich must be so happy."

The Eucharistic Year was opened on the grounds of the International Center by request from the Archbishop himself. The festive celebration was the result of the collaboration of Schoenstatt Family and archdiocesan officials. The Marquette University Liturgical Choir provided music for the spirited liturgy. The day began with a rosary procession from the entrance of the center through the grounds and to the huge tent next to the Shrine where Holy Mass was celebrated on a sunny fall day.

Eucharistic Procession to the Shrine

After Holy Mass, the crowd, led by the Archbishop, processed to the Shrine with the Holy Eucharist. After a moment of solemn adoration, all were invited to close the day with refreshments in the International Center.

The Gospel for the day was taken from the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke’s gospel. It was the story of 10 lepers who met Jesus along the road and begged him for pity. Upon being cured, they dispersed and only one of the ten returned to thank Jesus.

"Nine of the lepers forgot Jesus," said Archbishop Dolan. "Only one returned to thank him. We, too, can take him for granted. We too can be among that nine. This [Eucharistic Year] is our chance to be part of the ten per cent who came back to thank him."
