NIGERIA, Fr. Klaus Desch/Fr. Alfred Kistler. Three women and two men in April 25, 2004, were commissioned to bring the Pilgrim MTA to families in the Archdiocese of Ibadan, Nigeria. The commissioning took part during the Annual Convention of Coordinators of the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign; the main subject of the meeting was the meaning of the Shrine for the Pilgrim Mother Campaign - in view of the dedication of the first Schoenstatt Shrine in Nigeria scheduled for October 23, 2004.

During the Meeting "Together for Europe" in Stuttgart, on May 8, 2004, Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community Sant'Egidio, called the movement, the church and all people of Europe to assume responsibility for Africa, and to become active in Africa. There is a new awareness of the meaning of the Schoenstatt Shrines in Africa - in South Africa, in Burundi, Tanzania, and soon in Nigeria, as well as the bigger, small or tiny beginnings in Kenya, Congo, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Chad, Ruanda, Eritrea, Benin …

Schoenstatt is present in Africa, and the graces from the Shrine reach the people there - like, for example, through the Pilgrim Mother in Nigeria.

A picture taken in the growing Shrine

April 25, 2004, the coordinators of the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign met by the growing Shrine in Ibadan. They had brought their Pilgrim MTA's, renewed their pledge, and five persons were commissioned for the first time to bring the Pilgrim Mother to the families.

Charles Ozioko gabe a talk on the meaning of the Shrine for the Pilgrim Mother. At the closing of the meeting, a picture was taken of all those working for the Pilgrim Mother, gathered in the growing Shrine - a symbol. The Pilgrim Mother brings the graces from the Shrine to many, and she will lead the people of Nigeria to the Shrine

A Shrine in construction

The roof-beams of the future Shrine are already set. Now everybody can recognize the form of the future Shrine. This little chapel has already brought much headache to the construction firm. It's a new experience to have to adjust the door at the very correct place and in that very form, to adjust the window-frames, to find fitting shingles for the roof. The workers are not used to work exactly according to construction drawings - so the bosses often have to be at the construction site to supervise the work. Good that the firm offered the work as a gift to Mary - only the material, not the work time . much more than thought before -, has to be paid.

The blessing is scheduled for October 23, 2004. The Schoenstatt Fathers are now preparing a brochure to make the new Shrine known and to invite all to collect spiritual contributions as a gift to the feast of Mary, the feast of the blessing. Nobody should come with empty hands…
