USA, Pat Simpkins. On the afternoon of Sunday, September7, 2003, Schoenstatt members gathered to celebrate the dedication of the first Schoenstatt Wayside Shrine in Ohio. At the invitation of the Spiritual Center of Maria Stein, a granite shrine was erected on an island site. The celebration was in honor of our Mother Thrice Admirable Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt under the title, "Mother and Educator".

Debbie Smith, Schoenstatt Girl’s Group Leader from Tipp City, Ohio gave the opening remarks. In this introduction a tribute was given to a local Sidney artist, Mrs. Sarah Collier whose design was chosen for the unique granite stone, which was mined in India.

Teaching all who are guided by her to be disciples of her Son

Blessing of the shrine was given by Father David Zink, St Louis Church, North Star, and St. Nicholas Church, Osgood, Ohio. Father Zink also gave the homily, which stressed the need in our present time for "a Mother, a Heavenly Mother". "In this role as Mother, Our Lady educates her children, teaching all who are guided by her to be disciples of her Son, Jesus Christ". Father Zink reminded everyone that, "All of us are ‘Wayfarers" on the path to heaven, led by our Blessed Mother."

Following the blessing of the shrine Father John White, St. Mary Church, Greenville, Ohio read an excerpt from a writing, ‘Mary, Our Mother and Queen’ by Father Joseph Kentenich, founder of the Schoenstatt Movement. Sister M. Danielle Peters, a Schoenstatt Sister of Mary invited the little children to adorn the shrine with flowers to honor Our Lady. Reverend Mr. Jerry Buschur, St. Henry Church, St. Henry, Ohio read the petitions. Other honored guests were Gordon and Carol Lis of Sidney, founding couple of the Schoenstatt Movement in Ohio and Leaders of the Schoenstatt Couples’ League. Gordon Lis led members in song as he accompanied songs of praise and celebration on his guitar. Father Zink gave the final blessing and then invited everyone to a social at the Retreat Center of Maria Stein.

May future wayside shrines dot the farmlands of Ohio

The rural town of Maria Stein is located in the mid-western section of Ohio. Farming is the major occupation of the sparsely populated area. Religion plays an important part in the lives of this areas inhabitants and Catholicism is the major religion. Many of the participants expressed to one another the beauty of the shrine and the hope that future shines will be forth coming on the farmlands of this beautiful countryside such as can be seen dotting the farmlands of Europe.
