PARAGUAY, ao/mkf. On May 16, 2003, the 20th General Assembly of the Latin American Bishop`s Council (CELAM), in Tuparenda, Paraguay - at the Schoenstatt Shrine - elected their new President: Cardinal Francisco Xavier Errázuriz Ossa, Cardinal of Santiago de Chile. Cardinal Errázuriz for many years was the chairperson of the General Presidium of the International Schoenstatt Movement, and Superior General of the Schoenstatt Fathers. "Yes, in all of America these days they are talking about Tupârendá," Father Antonio Cosp, Movement director of the Schoenstatt Movement in Paraguay, affirms. On May 13, the 29th General Assembly of the Latin American Bishops's Conference (CELAM) was opened in en Tupârendá, 35 kilometers from the capital, Asunción, in the shadow of the Schoenstatt Shrine. The bishops live and work in the Joseph Kentenich Retreat House. The Conference took place May 13 - 16. Tupârendá is the Guaraní name of the place of the National Schoenstatt Shrine of Paraguay; it means: "Home of God". Among the 72 bishops participating in the "Home of God", are 11 Cardinals; one of them is Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Prefect of the Pontificial Congregation of the Bishops, and President of the Pontificial Committee for Latin America. The Cardinal of Santiago, Chile, Francisco Javier Errázuriz, who for years was the chairperson of the General Presidium of the International Schoenstatt Movement, participates; host is Bishop Claudio Gimenez of Caacupé, the president of the Paraguayan Bishops' Conference, a Schoenstatt Father. CELAM was to analyze de pastoral plan for Latin America 2003 - 2007, and to elect a new president and board of directors. The assembly will close on May 16 with a Holy Mass in the National Shrine of the Patroness of Paraguay, Our Lady of Caacupé. "May they, in the Shrine, experience a new Pentecost""We are glad with the presence of the bishops Tupârendá and wish that they may experience, in our Shrine, gathered around Mary, experience a new Pentecost," Fr. Antonio Cosp wrote in the April issue of the magazine "Tupârendá". "Yes, in all of America these days they are talking about Tupârendá. And... it is the capital of the 'Nation of God' for Paraguay." |
