PORTUGAL, Guillermo Pérez de Lema. On Saturday, May 18th, 2002, two members of the Secular Institute of the Schoenstatt Fathers, deacons Melo, and Diogo Barata, in Lisbon were ordained to the priesthood through the Archbishop of Evora, Maurílio Quintal de Gouveia. The new priests had chosen this Covenant Day, the vigil of Pentecost, as the day of their ordination.

In his sermon, Archbishop Maurílio asked the new priests and, with them, the Schoenstatt family that had gathered to serve the church faithful to the charisma of the Father and Founder. Several members of the Schoenstatt family participated in the celebration, among them a number of people who had come from outside Portugal just to join in the ordination. A big delegation came from Spain – country of a strong attachment of both of the new priests from being youth -, country also of Father Diogo's Pastoral Practical four years ago.

A Vocation, Born in the Love of A Family - in the Shadow of the Shrine

Father Diogo celebrated his First Mass in Pentecost Sunday in the shadow of the Shrine in Lisbon, the Shrine "Cenacle of the Family of the Father". In his sermon, Father Ivan Simicic explained the meaning of the ordinations in the context on Pentecost, reminding the new priest that he should see his office as a service for the Pentecostal mission of the Father and Founder of Schoenstatt. At the end of the Mass, Father Diogo turned to the Schoenstatt family gathered by the Shrine. With tangible emotion, he recalled having witnessed the construction of the Shrine as a small boy. His parents' love, he said, had in silence laid the foundation for his vocation to the priesthood. He thanked all those who had accompanied him on his way to the ordination and during his way towards priesthood. After the Mass, the two newly ordained priests in the Shrine gave the individual blessing to those present.

A Sign of Divine Love for the Schoenstatt Movement in Portugal

This Pentecostal celebration is a special event for the recently erected Iberian Delegature of the Schoenstatt Fathers, as well as a sign of Divine love for the Schoenstatt Movement in Portugal. The two newly ordained priests will work in parishes of Lisbon for the next time. Afterwards they will probably work for the Schoenstatt Movement in Portugal that counts with four Schoenstatt Shrines and Centers.

The First Mass of Father José was on Sunday, May 26th, in his home town Porto.
