(ps) More than 1,0000 Catholic priests, deacons, and seminarians, as well as ministers from other Christian Churches are recently attending the 10th International Theological and Pastoral Congress in the Mariapolis Center, Castelgandolfo, Rome (June 26 - 28, 2001). The Priests' Movement, a branch of the Focolare Movement, promotes the Congress. Father Dr. Michael Joh. Marmann, chairperson of the General Presidium of the Schoenstatt Movement, on June 27 speaks about "The Schoenstatt Movement and Evangelization".

The 10th International Theological and Pastoral Congress, promoted by the Focolare Movements of Priests, is to give evidence of the "new evangelization" brought about by ecclesial movements.

The founders and leaders the main Ecclesial Movements, representing the charismas given to the Church by the Spirit in the 20th century are together on the three-day conference that began on June 26.

A New Spring of the Church

Neocatechumenal Way; Salvatore Martinez, Renewal in the Spirit; Bishop Vincenzo Paglia, Sant'Egidio Community; Jesús Carrascosa and Father Gerolamo Castiglioni, Communion and Liberation; Chiara Lubich, Focolare Movement.

The congress is one of the results of common witness proposed by John Paul II to the new Movements and communities at Pentecost 1998, which he himself described as "a new spring of the Church." Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Sant'Egidio Community, addresses the topic "Development of Communion Among the Ecclesial Movements and with the Pastors of the Church from '98 to Today." Spiritual and theological talks are given by Natalia Dallapiccola on "The God of Today: Jesus Crucified and Forsaken, Key to Ecclesial Communion," and by professor Piero Coda, who speaks on "Hierarchical and Charismatic Gifts in Communion for the Edification and Mission of the Church." Father Michael Marman speaks about Schoenstatt and the New Evangelization.

Lay Movements Crucial for the Missionary Character of the Church and the Defense of Human Life

The Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, Cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos, urged the leaders of the lay movements to work for the unity of their members with the hierarchy of the Church. He emphasized the decisive role of the lay movements for the missionary character of the Church. The Cardinal also stressed the need of formation of laypersons and added, that the responsible leadership of these movements could help to defend the dignity and value of the human person.
