The Face of Christ

CristoSr. M. Fatima Dotto. The fire in the Province House belonging to the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary destroyed the attic and the roof. This is where a large image of the crucified Christ had been carefully stored.

Everything was destroyed and, surprisingly, the face of Christ was almost intact. We were all so surprised by this that even the firefighters said that they had never seen such a thing in all their years of experience in this difficult and beautiful work.

The face of Christ among the ruins reminds us of the mission our founder, Fr. Joseph Kentenich, entrusted to Brazil: to be a Tabor of the glories of Christ and Mary.

Reflecting on this face of Christ, we can say:Cristo de Santa Maria

Christ,
Your face shines out from the ruins,
Everything is destroyed
But you are Lord and King.
You are a comfort to those who suffer,
Hope for the afflicted and the despairing,
A safe-haven of peace,
A sign of God’s presence.

Christ,
Your face shines out from among the ruins,
You light our way
With your goodness, your Shepherd’s love and faithfulness.
Contemplating your face,
It seems you’re saying to us:
“Once again, I walked through the fire of pain,
The burning flames of suffering,
To save your life and lead you to the Father!”

Christ,
Your face radiates love and goodness,
Teach us to trust in the Father,
To live in heroic child-likeness,
And in your attitude of total child-like giving,
To give our answer of love:
Yes, Father!
