100 Years, 100 Houses, 100 Families – A Network of the Covenant of Love in Solidarity

ONE HUNDRED HOUSES, org. It has been 100 years and it is a topic in almost all newspapers in the world:  When on that 28th of June of 1914, the gunfire from Sarajevo ended the life of the heir to the crown of Austria-Hungary and his wife, the first reactions plunged the world into hours to  a point of no-return.  It led to World War I, the original catastrophe of the Twentieth Century.  When four years later, Joseph Engling died in the trenches of this war, offering his life to his Blessed Mother in the Shrine at Schoenstatt, the Covenant of Love sealed on that 18th of October of 1914, became a point of no-return.  When the idea from a small group of Schoenstatters to seal a Covenant of solidarity between themselves and Pope Francis, it was expressed in the first house of solidarity built in the heart of Paraguay for families in extreme poverty, the Covenant of solidarity with Francis became its point of no-return.  It was a year ago.  Less than 10 are needed to reach the 100 basic houses, given to one hundred families who live in extreme poverty.  They will be forever, the living memory of the Covenant of Love in solidarity with Pope Francis.

100 houses are being built for 100 families who live in most absolute poverty, in shanties of sticks and plastic.  These houses in solidarity have been built from small private contributions and from many Schoenstatt Shrines from throughout the world, including Home Shrines – from Madrid, Spain, Switzerland and Germany.

Enters the natural solidarity of the children

A little girl gave, as part of her family’s contribution, her moneybox in which she had been saving the gifts from “mouse Pérez” – a Spanish tradition – for each tooth she lost, so that the children in Paraguay would have what she herself had always had, a home with her family.

“For now, the most moving has been my young daughter giving us “all her saved money” from mouse Pérez, relates Lourdes Navarro as she handed in the donation from her Home Shrine “Gethsemani” in Madrid.

“But I must say that this is not my idea, it is a “copy,” and comes from the “Alcántara Home Shrine.”  My sister-in-law told me how her children wanted to participate, each one of them donating from their own money.  I told my seven year old daughter what her cousins had done and she ran for her money, never doubting.

How wonderful that a house would come from a Home Shrine, and then another and another…..!  How marvelous!  Blessed Mother will take care that there be more than 100, I do not doubt it for a moment.  And thank you to    schoenstatt.org  for this precious idea.”

A gift for the coronation in the Home Shrine

A family from Switzerland had been preparing for a long time, the coronation of the Blessed Mother in their Home Shrine.  The parents decided to make a coronation gift which would be everlasting:  a house for a family.

What a surprise when the youngest child, 12 year old Johannes, convinced his four brothers to raise money in order to give “a house from us children.”

With a happy face, at the coronation, he presented the model of a house in solidarity…..to give to the children of a family a roof, a home…..

Solidarity clients

A family from Austria, owners of a small business and in charge of a mailing office, gave a house of solidarity on behalf of their “shrine office.”

In addition, they placed a moneybox in the form of a house on the counter…..and a family spontaneously decided to donate a complete house.  200 Euros.  A roof for a family…..

On the background of a presentation of products, the moneybox was filled by contributions from their clients, including from members of the Focolare Movement, representing the initiative of Economy in Community.

To  a family from Paraguay, from Ciudad del Este, who had to transfer urgently some money to Germany, it was offered to them to use the accounts of the houses in solidarity in order to save on the enormous cost of transferring a relatively small sum.  After knowing what this initiative was all about, they decided to donate a house of solidarity…..the second one that came from Paraguay.

At a May celebration at the Shrine in Memhoelz, Germany, Fr. Leonhard Erhard said that the name “Memhoelz” is known beyond Germany, inclusively in a poor neighborhood in Paraguay where two families live in a house called “Memhoelz,” houses whose pictures were in the hallway of the center.  A day later, a neighbor of the Schoenstatt Center who participated in that celebration, appeared with an envelope in her hands containing 200 Euros.  “I want the name of my family to be recognized in this neighborhood in Paraguay,” she said.  “I want a family to live in a house which bears the name of my family…..”

Would it not be precious that their would also be a little house with the name MARIA AYUDA SPAIN?

One of the families from Madrid, Spain, enthusiastic about the jubilee gift of “100 houses for 100 families,” went to those in charge of “María Ayuda Spain” with a motivational presentation of the “100 houses for 100 families,” and concluding:  Would it not be precious that there  would also be a little house with the name MARIA AYUDA SPAIN?

Of course – as soon as the rain stops – there will be a house with the name Mary Helps Spain…..

100 houses for the Lord’s favorites

5 houses are lacking to reach the 100 jubilee houses.  On May 31st of 2013, with the covenant in solidarity with Francis expressed in 100 houses for 100 families, the schoenstatt.org team reached a point of no-return.  Today it is no longer a gift from the team, but a gift from the network of the Covenant of Love in solidarity from  schoenstatt.org.   A gift to the Holy Father Francis, 100 homes for God’s favorites, his poorest children, from whom each day we learn how to live the Gospel, exactly as Francis indicates to us with his words and gestures.

And when we arrive at 100 houses, let us not stop there.
100 houses in gratitude for 100 years of Schoenstatt.
But we are going forward into the next 100 years.
How about 100 houses for the future?
