WORLD DAY OF THE POOR, Maria Fischer with material from ACI and RV •
Thousands of poor and excluded people will participate in the Mass that Pope Francis will celebrate in Rome on Sunday 19 November to commemorate the first World Day of the Poor.
After the Mass, 1.500 people will gather in Pope Paul VI Hall for a festive meal with Pope Francis, while another 2.500 people will be welcomed at various seminaries and Catholic colleges where they will also receive lunch.
The poor will be joined by members of volunteer organizations from Rome, Lazio and various dioceses around the world who will meet in St. Peter’s for the Mass.
A Roman covenant of solidarity in the service of the poor
Forty deacons from the Diocese of Rome and about 150 volunteers from parishes in the diocese will serve the poor.
The Day was organized in collaboration with the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization and Caritas, the San Egidio Community, the Order of Malta, the New Horizons community, the john XXIII Community, Fratello 2016, Opere Antoniane of Rome, ACLI Rome and other charitable organizations in Rome.
The menu to be served in John VI Hall will be prepared by ‘Al Piopetto’ and will consist of various traditional Italian foods.
The Vatican Police Music Band and ‘El Dolci Note’ choir will provide the entertainment.
World Day of the Poor at the Schoenstatt Shrines
How will Schoenstatt participate in the World Day of the Poor? What will Schoenstatters be doing?
Fr. Pedro Kühlke has already told me what they will be doing at Tupãrenda on 19 November. “On Sunday for World Day of the Poor, we will have a special collection for Casa Madre de Tupãrenda.” In other words, it is a collection for those young people living in the shadow of the shrine, where Schoenstatt members have extended a hand (or two) in solidarity for these people, who in their 15 or 16 years, have already experienced more pain, abandonment, criminality and abuse than many adults could possibly imagine. There they receive personal formation, skills training, food, clothes, a roof over their heads and, most importantly open, merciful, motherly and fatherly hearts.
We want to give all Scheonstatters who read these lines, the opportunity to participate, even from a distance, in this collection of solidarity with the World Day of the Poor. Together we can give the young people of Tupãrenda a sign of hope and solidarity on this day. We are brothers.

The World Day of the Poor
The World Day of the poor is the result of a strong desire by Pope Francis at the conclusion to the Year of Mercy that the whole Christian community feels called to reach out a hand to the poor, the weak and men and women whose dignity has been trampled.
