Pentecost: Praying in solidarity for peace

org. Once again the world looks towards the Vatican, simultaneously filled with hope and astonishment: Presidents Peres and Abbas will meet to pray in the Vatican on Pentecost Sunday, 8 June, following Pope Francis’ invitation to them during his trip to the Holy Land from 24 to 26 May.

The Holy Spirit came down on Pentecost, once again bringing peace to the disciples and sending them to preach the Good News beyond Palestine.  On 8 June, on the Feast of Pentecost, Francis will meet with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the Vatican to pray for a peace that today seems to be a little closer to becoming a reality.

Pope Francis extended the invitation on the second day of his pilgrimage, on 25 May, before the Sunday Regina Coeli prayers at Manger Square in Bethlehem (Palestine).  There, in front of thousands of people who gathered to hear the Catholic Church’s top representative, Pope Francis offered “his house” in the Vatican to both presidents to pray together for peace.

The meeting on 8 June between Pope Francis, Israeli President Shimon Peres and the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, will be an “act of introspection and prayer to culminate all the efforts of his trip so as to begin a new chapter,” the Argentinean rabbi, Abraham Skorka, who is a great to Pope Francis’ and will participate in this event, told the Jewish News Agency.

Building peace “is difficult but to live without peace is a torment,” said Pope Francis.  The initiative announced by Francis has been very well-received by ordinary people, most governments and the main media houses all over the world because it introduces an extraordinary development in the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians, at a time when the negotiation process has stalled.

A proposal in covenant solidarity with Francis

Francis called on Catholics to “not leave us alone, praying intensely.”

A daring proposal from the editorial team: What if we accompanied Pope Francis on Pentecost Sunday from our shrines, home Shrines…with our prayers?

A daring vision: a network of solidarity shrines supporting Pope Francis in this Pentecostal moment…
