30 days to illuminate the world, overshadowed by poverty, hunger and inequality

SPAIN, Manos Unidas/rd. The new Manos Unidas (United Hands) webpage, “24 hours that move the world” is already on-line. This is a global work of sensitivity in solidarity through which, this NGO invites everyone who wishes to participate. From the 30th of September to the 30th of October, those who wish to do so can give light to the world by entering 24horas.manosunidas.org, and through this webpage, interacting with a world map that, for now, is overshadowed by the situations of poverty, hunger and inequality that Manos Unidas has struggled against for more than fifty-five years in countries throughout the world. The world can be illuminated not only through a donation for a project; but also through the simple act of taking interest. And the light will be multiplied when it is disseminated. Communication is a service. Communication changes the world.

Little by little, as people begin to interact with the ninety projects of cooperation in the development selected for this activity, new lights in thirty-seven countries will be lit, and the world map will light up. The aim is that the entire world will be illuminated by the 30th of October, thanks to the involvement of all the people who, in this way, want to fight against the poverty in which millions of people live in so many places of our planet. It is very simple to participate:

  1. Enter http://manosunidas.org/24horas

  2. Move through the map to discover some of the places of the world where Manos Unidas works, concretely, those countries were the Delegations of Manos Unidas support projects in 2014 through the one called “Operación Enlace” (“Operation Link) [1].

  3. Choose the country that you want to light by clicking on it, and you will see how your action will become a reality in a few seconds.

  4. Multiply the effect of that light; you can make a donation to the work Manos Unidas carries out in that country, or share your action on Facebook and/or on Twitter.

  5. Learn more about the work of Manos Unidas in that country, pressing “More info”.

This second edition of the “24 hours that move the world” also has an off-line part or presence, in the participation through “Events of light”: face to face activities which will take place throughout the month of October in some of the cities where Manos Unidas is present with its diocesan delegations. In these works, a more detailed exhibition of the development project supported throughout this year by this delegation will be carried out so that all those who have made donations can see more closely how the money really becomes a development and future, and they will also take the opportunity to thank the businesses, institutions and entities that have collaborated. In addition, there are prepared exhibitions, concerts, round tables and video forums.

AND ON THE 30th OF OCTOBER “LIGHT THE FLAME”

On the 30th of October, the Delegations of Manos Unidas and whoever wishes can also participate in direct gestures of support of the projects through the webpage 24hora.manosunidas.org, by sending us a photo with a lighted candle, joining the activity “Light the flame”, which was a success during the last edition with more than 1,250 photos received from thirty countries and with the support of many popular faces.

This 30th of October, and through the “Light the Flame”, it will possible to make a trip throughout the world, traveling virtually in appreciation of time zones, from zero hour in Spain emphasizing a Manos Unidas priority or a developing project corresponding to one of the countries covered in that particular time zone in order to make them more visible.

Manos Unidas is an Association of the Catholic Church in Spain for the help, promotion and development of countries in the South. 89.6% of our income comes from private sources and 10.4% comes from the public sector.

The virtual tents of covenant culture – a world map of solidarity

Even without technology at the service of Manos Unidas, the virtual tents of covenant culture show an illuminated world; in many places through covenant solidarity as the soul of a covenant culture – of a covenant of love in solidarity with children, families, the poor, the marginalized and refugees…How about “traveling” through these projects during these days before the 18th of October? …and become a part by donating, collaborating or simply by sharing…
