Schoenstatt couples at the heart of the World Meeting of Families

COSTA RICA, Lourdes Rosabal •

Lately Costa Rican couples are eagerly preparing for the World Meeting of Families (WMOF) with Pope Francis, 22 -26 August, 2018. They are not only going to participate, but they have also been assigned the task as a country to prepare the Schoenstatt Families’ Meeting that will attend WMOF in Dublin, in a parish near the site where the Festival of Families will be held. —

This meeting will be held on Saturday, 25 August, during the afternoon (2:00 -4:30 pm) at St. Joseph Church in the East Wall of Dublin.

Fr. Alexandre Awi, Schoenstatt Father, will participate; he will share his experience as Secretary to the Dicastery of Laity, Families, and Life in the preparation of WMOF at the side of Pope Francis, in addition to a motivation presenting what is experienced in our communities and countries. The family of Douglas and Vivian Moser will also attend; they are Brazilians who live in Spain. They are one of the two Schoenstatt couples that will be panelists of the presentation “Why Get Married by the Church?” and they will also share their experience.

The others – although they will not participate in the Meeting of Schoenstatt Families – are Dr. Ingeborg and Richard Sickinger, national coordinators of the Austrian Schoenstatt Movement. They will participate in the panel: “Who washes dishes in our family? Pope Francis in the small things that are important to family life.”

In the center of the Meeting, there will be a stand that will present the Home Shrine and projects, such as the Schoenstatt Rosary Campaign.

Returning to the Meeting of Schoenstatt Families: the Family and Life will do the closing with a multilingual Mass, to finally go out, everyone together, on pilgrimage to the Festival of Families, in Croke Park, a 20-minute walk from the parish.

It will be a great opportunity to share and to unite as the great family we are!

World Meeting of Families

1994 was declared an “International Year of the Family” by the United Nations. St. Pope John Paul II wanted the Church to also celebrate the Year of the Family, and so the 1st World Meeting of Families was held. It took place in Rome on 8 and 9 October 1994 under the guidance of the Pontifical Council for the Family that went on to organize all subsequent WMFs.

Since then, every three years, in different places around the world, a World Meeting of Families has been held, together with an International Pastoral-Theological Congress. It concludes with a Festival of Families in the presence of the Pope and a great final Eucharistic Celebration.

The 9th World Meeting is scheduled to be held in Dublin (Ireland), from 22 to 26 August 2018, on a theme the Pope chose: “The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World,” framed in the context of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia and coordinated by Cardinal K. Farrell presiding over the new Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life.
