Father Jaime Fernández 1932-2016

Father Jaime Fernández Montero, 84, died on February 24, 2016, in Bellavista, Chile. The funeral Mass took place on Friday, February 26th, at noon in the Church of the Holy Spirit at the Schoenstatt Shrine. Cardinals Ezzati and Errázuriz presided at the ceremony.

He was born on October 16, 1932 and was ordained a priest in 1961. In his long uninterrupted trajectory of pastoral endeavor (55 years), he highlighted his support for the Sacrament of marriage and the family. Father Jaime occupied the post of Episcopal Vicar for the Family from 1992 to 2007. From 2008 to the present, he worked in hospital pastoral ministry in Santiago.

Father Jaime Fernández, from the first Schoenstatt generation in Chile, had an important role in the beginning of the Schoenstatt Movement in Portugal and Ecuador.

He was, furthermore, a distinguished collaborator of Editorial Nueva Patris (publishing house), a true pastor, an example of Christian life, author of more than seventy books on family, marriage, education of children, image of the father and the mother, the Church and the Schoenstatt Movement.

Pastoral experience

His most widely known books are: “Matrimonio Vocación de Amor” [Marriage, Vocation of love], “Diálogo Conyugal” [Conjugal Dialogue], “Originalidad y Complementación de los Sexos” [Originality and Complementation of the Sexes], and “La Educación de los Hijos” [Education of Children]; all translated into various languages and widely spread in numerous countries.

In his memory, Nueva Patris offers an interview made of Father Jaime Fernández on March 17, 2015 in which he speaks of his book “Una experiencia pastoral” [A Pastoral Experience] in which he refers to his meetings with our Father and Founder, in “the theological vision and pedagogical ways for a pastoral approach which can truly be effective,” and likewise the value of the person.
