Studies on Covenant Culture

Agathe Hug. The conference on Mount Sion for doctoral students from the Schoenstatt Fathers concluded on September 9th. The conference theme, along with the presentation of each one of the dissertations, was the question on “Covenant Culture” in Schoenstatt. This theme has been of utmost importance in light of the preparation for 2014.

It was a 10-day conference. The conference for doctoral students was organized by “Sion Institute,” an internal foundation of the Schoenstatt Fathers, among others, with the objective for supporting members of their institute while they are preparing to complete their doctoral or master’s studies and fields of study. This initiative also provides them with new motivations from the perspective of the Schoenstatt spirituality.

Participating in the conference were: Father Alexandre Awi (Brazil), Father Cruz Viale (Argentina), Father Mauricio Cox (Chile), Father Lourdu Stephen (India), Father Joy Puthussery (India), Father Peter Locher (Germany) and Father Jonathan Niehaus (USA). Fathers Locher and Niehaus are responsible for the Sion Institute.

At the conclusion of the conference, the fathers had the kindness of giving schoenstatt-tv a summary of their reflections and what had been learned. Concurrently, two fathers spoke on one of the following points:

1. What is culture? Those speaking were:
Father Peter Locher (in German)
Father Lourdu Stephen (in English)

2. What is covenant culture?
Father Mauricio Cox (Spanish)
Father Joy Puthussery (English)

3. Which strategies can help us to arrive at this covenant culture?
Father Cruz Viale (Spanish)
Father Alexandre Awi (Portuguese)

Language diversity

Language diversity is a special challenge, but on the other hand, it also shows the richness of our Schoenstatt Family. Behind each language, another culture is represented and another horizon of different experiences which give shape to personal life. Attached to this, there is probably another access to the topic of covenant culture. If covenant culture is not reduced to the minimum common denominator of “we-all-love-each-other,” then special needs emerge. To have clarity for these needs and to find a strategy for dealing with them – the summary makes this inviting.

Schoenstatt-TV will transmit the summary on December 4, 5:00 PM local time Germany.
