Pilgrimage to the St. Rose of Lima Shrine

PERU, Fr. Luis Alberto Celis /editorial team •

On Thursday, 30 August 2018, the feast of the Solemnity of St. Rose of Lima, Patroness of Lima, Peru and of Latin America, some priests of the first course of Schoenstatt Federation of Diocesan Priests went on pilgrimage to her shrine, where they prayed for the intentions of the universal Church and the Church in Peru. —

To mark the occasion of the 400th anniversary St. Rose of Lima’s death, three years ago the Archbishop of Lima launched an App and a website [in Spanish] so that the faithful could send their prayer petitions to the Patroness of America, the Indies and Philippines. Since then, every year on 30 August, “more than 10 thousand letters arrive from all over the world via email and social media networks, which are always printed and deposited at the Wishing Well [inside the shrine]”.

Schoenstatt.org offers something similar from its web site. For the last seven years, letters sent via Schoenstatt.org are also printed and placed monthly in the jar inside the Original Shrine.  This website does not receive 10,000  letters, but some 500 letters arrive every month from all continents.

The Archbishop of Lima explained that the mobile app and website require registration, so that “users can receive personalized activities and news in real time” In addition to official information about the life of the Patroness of Americas, both the website and the App have the option to locate and to learn about the significant places of her life using GPS and Google Maps.

According to the archbishop’s statement, “the novel thing about this app is that if the user wishes, they can publish an expression of gratitude or a testimony about some miracle or answered prayer.”

St. Rose of Lima OP was a Christian mystic, a Dominican Tertiary, canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671, as the first American saint.
